East Midlands Airport has been named the most eco-friendly airport in the world.
The airport received the accolade from the World Travel Awards; the green award category was voted for the first time by more than 165,000 travel agencies and professionals in 200 countries worldwide.
East Midlands was commended for its plans to be carbon neutral by 2012, its new environmentally friendly pier which contains ground heating pumps, wind catchers and water recycling facilities, as well as its plans to install wind turbines to generate ten per cent of on-site electricity.
East Midlands Airport’s managing director, Penny Coates, said: "Winning this award not only puts us on the map, but it also highlights the East Midlands region as a whole. It is something that everyone should be proud of."
