A-380 (SQ-380 SIN-SYD) Sydney Tarmac Photos

Thu Oct 25, 2007 11:23 am

G'day A' netters   ,

The Whale-Jet has finally arrived, somewhat late but better that than never! SQ A-380, 9V-SKA touched down just after 17:20 local Sydney time from Singapore to complete the first ever commercial A-380 flight. 9V-SKA broke out from low cloud to complete a landing run using most of runway 34L at Sydney.

The arrival of 9V-SKA also marks the beginning of a new era of commercial aviation. Will the A-380 sell like hotcakes as a response to alleviating congestion at major airports as Airbus predicts, or will Boeing's dynamic duo of the B777 / B787 steal a part of the A-380's thunder?

Anyway, here are some photos I took earlier this evening at Bay 57 of the Sydney International Terminal. As usual, I apologise for the quality, but the weather and time of arrival were also against me on this occasion. There are quite a lot of photos, so you may have trouble seeing them if Photo-bucket decides to throw a hissy fit.

These are the links to the two A-380 discussion threads currently open in Civ-Av;

Airbus A380 - The Final Countdown. (Part 2) (by WINGS Oct 13 2007 in Civil Aviation)
The Official A380 First Flight Thread: Check-in! (by SQ452 Oct 24 2007 in Civil Aviation)

This is a link to some earlier A-380 photos taken in Sydney during much better weather conditions;

A380 Sydney Tarmac Photos. (by JetMech Nov 28 2006 in Civil Aviation)

On a personal note, I think that the SQ livery with the large titles and the A-380 make a very handsome pairing! Fantastic looking in an absolute sense, and much better than the Airbus house colours.

Regards, JetMech

Fantastic photos! It really does look great in SIA colours. It is strange to see it operating as just another passenger flight after all the tests and fly bys etc. I'm looking forward to seeing it myself next year in London (and maybe even flying on it). Soon these will a common sight all over the world.

Excellent pics man!!!!!!

Even though I don't think the plane is all that good looking, the size of it is incredible, esp. from the ramp.

Bravo Airbus for producing another magnificent flying machine!

Great photos! Are the luggage pallets the standard size? They look so small in comparison with the plane!

I had wondered how they would load/unload to allow premiums off first, but also to cater for the huddled masses in economy! I guess the A bridge (not labelled but L hand one) is for First, then upper deck Business: B is for lower deck business then lower deck economy: then C is for upper deck economy?

In some of them you almost feel like you can just reach out and touch the plane.

I can't wait for the whale plane to land in YUL ( November 12th) , to see it in person.

I was at SYD watching the 380 arrive and I also noticed a very large number of staff at the gate - so were they observers or just making sure everything went smoothly. I don't expect every 380 arrival will get that amount of attention. The 380 overflew the airport some time prior to arrival but not sure everyone noticed it - it was in and out of the clouds and very quiet.

You've gotta be kidding right? A couple hundred tickets were auctioned and then the money will be given by SQ to charity and the rest were airbus employees as well as SQ employees. I think 200-300 tickets were auctioned if I was correct? You can't expect vacant seats on the SQ A380 for a while I think.

Very nice! I never realized just how low to the ground she sits till looking at these pics and seeing how she sits on her main gear.

So my big question is: How was the disembarkation? I imagine this flight (and the first few probably) will be different as you didn't have a normal passenger load. Most people on this one are there just because they can be and want to be on the "first flight" so its a different caliber of passenger. Will the three jet bridges be the norm for all flights at all destinations?

I like the pic of her head-on with the jetbridge connected, looks like she's getting kissed by an over-zealous fan.  Silly

Certainly won't be at LHR. They have only installed 2 bridges on the A380 stands.

Great pics. I stayed up to watch the departure live on BBC News 24 which was quite amusing with the night shift news reader having to comment live without autocue - " umm it's not really doing much - umm it's taxiing on a runway umm we'll come back to it in a moment" !!.

It was a fantastic moment to watch. I've followed the A380 with interest since the first A3-XX concept pics were released around 7 years ago. I can't wait to get a flight on it.

While I expect two bridges to by typical, I HOPE that airports convert to three. Studies have show the disembarcation time is the most stressful on the passenger.

Congrats to SQ, SIN, and SYD. Now get a bunch more of those A380's out there. Switching to a regional perspective, we're desperate for more J class seats for LAX/SFO to India! I don't care where the stopover is, there just need to be far more J class seats made available.  spin  (DXB, ICN, NRT, BKK... wherever) Switch airlines? Ok (but I prefer sticking on one airline).

Since I live at a hub and usually connect via another hub (or my destination is the other hub), I'm unusually biased for an American towards boosting hub to hub capacity. Oh, I believe in point to point growing the market too. But I realize that for the last decade the growth has been 50% hub to hub and 50% "point to point" where the majority has really been more "hub to point" growth due to mega-urbanization. (But I don't have the stats on the tip of my fingers.) And some of those new "hub to point" connections have really been new long haul "hub to hub."  Wink

So when is the 1st flight of airline #2?  duck

These are some of the most up-close and personal shots I've seen to date of the A380. I never cease to marvel at the sheer size of the beast. I think my favorite picture is the one where the Qantas 744 is in the background... welcoming the 380 to the "Jumbo" club after having the skies to herself for the past 40 years. I can't wait to see a 380 at SFO, and hope some domestic carriers buy some of these aircraft.

Congratulations Airbus and SQ!!

Bet you'll never see a MLG bay and landing gear bogies that clean and free of grease (barring brand-new aircraft on their delivery flight) again, JetMech Big grin

You've gotta be kidding right?

Nope. I wanted to see if they could ACTUALLY fill up that airplane to the max or not and still make a buck or two. And I didn't know that this was a 'charity' flight.

Quoting Lightsaber (Reply 39):
While I expect two bridges to by typical, I HOPE that airports convert to three.

Highly unlikely, as most airlines are actually happy with 2 - L2L for F & Y pax, with U1L for J & Y... and also the cost is prohibitive at the moment... Interesting that 2 gates at LHR T4 are going to be converted to A380-capable with 2 bridges, and there are planes for a few more gates in T3. But with SQ moving to the future Heathrow East, more 380-gates are required there as well!

As for disembarkation, 3 bridges is a luxury and also rather unnecessary, as L1L is only for 12 F-pax, so hardly over-utilised!

We were told that the 380 will have a standard groundtime of approx 93 minutes, not bad when a 744 is 90!

Nice to see her flying...!
