UAL 747-400 Was At EWR Tonight - Anyone Know Why?

Fri Oct 26, 2007 4:34 am

I saw a United 747-400 parked at UPS ramp at Newark this evening.

It later departed around 7PM. Anyone know where it went or who it was carrying?

I haven't seen any heavies from United at EWR recently at all.

Did the Giants go to London yet? Could this be their ride?

This was the Giants charter to London. I'm surprised it was an early red-eye, but I guess they didn't want to lose a day, and their trainers determined that it was the best timing to deal with jetlag. The game will be a 1pm Eastern time game, so they may have decided just to never adjust to the time? Sleep in until 11AM every day London time, start the day then?

And CO is extremely tight on widebody lift for such a journey (and has no 744's), as opposed to flying teams around domestically. As was already noted by numerous above you.. it was indeed the Giants' ride.

I find it interesting that United, also very tight on widebody lift, would be able to spare a 744 given the limited number in their fleet.

The "official airline" of XYZ does not in any way mean that the actual entity must fly that airline. It only means that said airline paid XYZ money to be called "the official airline" of XYZ.

CO paid to put their name on Brendan Byrne arena as well as sponsor the Giants, but that's as far as it goes. The Giants charter what they think is best.

The official airline of Disney is (was?) Delta, but Disney execs routinely fly AA and UA because they are a 3 class carrier and it's in their contract to fly first class.

So it seems to me anyway from the reply by N1120A that he felt that the Giants should be on a CO aircraft, and I just merely pointed out that they do not fly CO.

UA has the charter contract for the Giants, normally they use a 757, with 767-300ER on West Coast trips. The only other time I have seen a UA 747-400 associated with the Giants is when one operated the family/staff charter to Tampa for Super Bowl XXXV in January 2001 (the team flew the usual 75). The 747 was probably arranged for the trip not long after the NFL announced the Giants would be playing Miami in London, so UA obviously had ample time to adjust their schedule for one ship to operate a lucrative charter service for an NFL team. Furthermore, October is usually the slowest month in the industry, so I'm sure there is some excess capacity in the system such that running a 747 charter was not a difficult proposition.

The question is, will this aircraft remain at LHR until Sunday night after the game, when the Giants return home, or will it operate a revenue trip back to the States Friday, then return in time to haul the G-Men back to EWR? My guess is no, but it's certainly feasible.

UA was, up until this year, the official airline of the Giants. I don't know if the 'official airline' designation includes provisions for operating team charters, but this could be a case of UA just running out the rest of their contract with the Giants, and maybe CO will be contracted to run their charters in the future. CO does not do much NFL work (Tampa Bay and Houston are the only two I can think of offhand), so this could be a possibility.

We (UA) currently do all of the charter work for the Bears, Broncos, and Giants. We used to do the 49'ers, but then DL got them. They have sucked ever since. No coincidence.

If I remember correctly the 752 is also a heavy not because of the weight but because of the wake the wings create.

I believe that both parties are correct here.

http://www.faa.gov/airports_airtraff...ions/ATpubs/AIM/Chap7/aim0703.html

AIM 7-3-9a clearly states that a 757 is not a heavy (it terms it "a large non-heavy aircraft [i.e. a B757 aircraft]"). However, that being said, it treats a 757 as a heavy for all relevant purposes.

See the definition of AIRCRAFT CLASSES in the Pilot/Controller Glossary http://www.faa.gov/airports_airtraff...ffic/publications/ATpubs/PCG/A.HTM

Incorrect, a 757-200 is not filed as or called a heavy. It is treated differently then large aircraft for wake turbulence purposes though. Here's some shots at EWR yesterday:

Well, yes and no. They pull one from the pool after planning for it to be available and in the right place. That means making sure it has it's maintenance in order and crews are available in the right place, etc.

Reminds me of my childhood, when you'd see UA 747s at EWR. Transcons to LAX for at least a short while. DC10s as well, of course. And DC8s. Though I never got to fly the DC8 in my life, as it was never scheduled for the flights we took to LAX...  Sad

I agree. I see them at LAX sometimes, and I am always blown away by how stunning the livery is, especially on the 744. I didn't think I'd like the blue/white considering UA's colors from the past, but the more I see it on the fleet, the more I think it's the best livery they had in my lifetime.

Retired from scheduled service maybe but still have 2 747-200's for charter flying, N623US (old colors) & N624US (new livery).

So far this season, the Packers, Browns and Dolphins have all ridden on the 742.

Heavy is added to the end of a callsign when aircraft weights more than 255,000lbs. Depending on the airline the max takeoff weight of a B752 is 255,000lbs. So if the B752 weighs 255,000lbs it is considered a HEAVY.

not to be too nit picky, but if the MTOW is 255K and the Heavy Call Sign is only for A/C OVER 255K, then it would not qualify...

757-200's are in a class of their own. On the radio the controller will say you are following a 757-200. Spacing from a small plan goes as follows.

3 miles in trail of a small
4 in trail of a 757
5 in trail of a heavy

As far as chartering, don't forget, just because an airline advertises a certain team, doesn't mean they have aircraft available to do the flights. I think right now, though, the CO Rockies are using Frontier, as the vacation flights are low, and they are a Denver airline. But then again, United also has a hub here. Anyone remember Pace Airlines? They do or at least did a lot of charters for sports teams too. Nothing says class and style like flying in a 752 with the Hooters logo!

I'm trying to think what's funnier, a college basketball team in a EMB145 along with paying pax, or the female softball team on one of my J41 flights from TRI to PIT. Either way it was hard to move down the aisle, but lots of fun.

This seems to be believed by many but is incorrect. Njgtr82 was right.

If an airplane is certified for a maximum gross takeoff weight of more than 255,000 pounds it is a heavy.

This means that if a B-767-200 is taking off empty at 220,000 pounds it is still a heavy.

The current weight of the aircraft plays no part in whether or not it is considered a heavy; that consideration was already made when the airplane rolled out of the factory.

The B-757-200 is never a heavy; it is merely given its own category of in-trail spacing.
