UA Swapping Aircraft Today - UA319 Is Now A TED?

Fri Oct 26, 2007 11:37 am

I am on UA319 (IAD-SFO) this morning and was just told that they are going to swap the normal aircraft (A319) for a TED (A320). I have never heard of them doing it this way, only swapping out TED planes for UA mainline planes when they need one.

I was upgraded and I know it is not the end of the world, but what happens to all of those folks who paid for F class and not there is no F class on their flights. Obviously they will be refunded or compensated, but I would still be pissed.

I was hoping to kick back and relax, since I am coming off of 16 hours of flying from South America and all I want to do now is get back to SFO.

Hopefully the IFE will work on the TED plane, as the last 2 flights I have been on they have been inoperational!

I can't believe that a TED plane is the only replacement plane they could find in IAD and then flying it on a Trancon route??? Maybe they need it on the West Coast???

Does anyone at UA know why they would do this? Just wondering...

I totally agree with you!

I just have never heard of them swapping a TED for a mainline. A few times I have been put on a mainline jet when it was a TED flight.

I jumpsat on a mainline A319 that was supposed to be a TED A320. I barely got on that bird and snagged the secondary jumpseat in the cockpit. All in all, despite the less comfortable seat, the view is better.

It's not rare, as you can see from the UA board on Flyertalk, but it doesn't happen every day. The worst one I had was an IAD-SFO a few years ago that went from a 777 to a Ted 320 due to maintenance. Still, it was better for UA to get some folks there on time rather than needing to rebook a full 777.

Its happened at MDT already, although I don't know if I consider it a downgrade. There were some Saturday night arrivals where the 733 was an A320, and sometimes a TED A320.

Happens all the time.

TED A320's and Mainline A320's and A319's are substituted based on equipment availability.

Every once in awhile TED shows up on the DEN-BOS run, substituting for a mainline A320.

from where? even SCL - IAD is not 16 hrs. Heck, SCL - CDG is not 16 hrs and it is the longest route in AF's long haul network. Unless of course you were going SCL-EZE-GIG-GRU-MIA-IAD or something like that...

He probably meant including the time to get from IAD-SFO.

That would sound about right if coming from Brazil or even Argentina on UA.

Don't think that's true. What he said was...

Even for those who paid for F, I think they'd generally prefer to get to their destination on the original schedule. One would also think that UA could keep the middle seat empty for those folks, no problem -- and even put an empty row between them so there's no one reclining into the more limited pitch.

Not perfect, and hopefully some other compensation, but way better than a 2 or 3 hour delay, I'd think.

I have a question. For those passengers who paid for F, would they have the option of choosing the new flight and a refund or a different flight in F? I'd imagine that they probably would as paid-F fares tend to be flexible, but I wanted to find out for sure.

The same thing has happened to my ORD-BUF flight tomorrow. It has gone from a mainline A319 to a TED (i assume) A320 but is still showing the A319 seat map.

Every fare essentially becomes flexible once an airline caused delay happens.

Sorry WindowSeat, I meant total traveling time from when my flights were suppose to leave...

16 hours of traveling time from SCL to IAD:

2 hour delay of LAN Peru 428
2 hour flight from SCL-EZE (LAN Peru 428)
2 hour layover
10 hour flight from EZE-IAD (UA 846)

8 hours of traveling time from IAD-SFO

3 hour layover
5 hour flight from IAD-SFO (UA319)

I know is was a little round about getting from SCL-SFO but since I am close to my Million Miles on UA, I thought I would be worth the effrort...

The CSM in IAD told me that the sub was because of a wing to wing collision in ORD yesterday that messed up the schedule. Guess they had to move a bunch of planes around within the schedules...

I overheard a UA CSM in SFO offering to refund the paid F class passengers. I was up in 'F' but upgraded using a systemwide from EZE-IAD-SFO. It wasn't that bad since gave all of us window and isles seats in rows 1 and 2 with no middle occupied. I was just glad to get home.

FYI, the next flight out of IAD was at 12:25pm (almost 3 hours later) and the 8:38am flight went out full (I was told).

I'm thinking the number of narrowbody variations....Airbus' and Boeings.....must be an operational nightmare and added cost of for United. Their Boeings 737s have 104, 110 and 128 seats. Their Airbus' have 120, 136 and 156 (Ted) seats, with 8 first class in A319s and 12 in a320s. Equipment subs must be nightmare for CSRs on full flights.....especially a downsize. Southwest (WN) with a one size fits all strategy, seems a lot easier...and maybe even cheaper.

I have had this occure while I was working ORD-BOS. Mainline A320 was changed to a TED aircraft.

Even though it was a TED a/c, we were catered for a mainline A320, meaning f/c wine bottles, liquore etc. The f/c passangers were given y+ (we were not full) and the manifest noted who were f/c pax. While we didnt offer a meal, we did give them free wine/cocktails, which is what they wanted anyway.

Everybody was fine except for one middle aged couple who kept going on and on about having to sit in economy seats! (new money obviously)

Even WN has two sizes of 737's: the 73G/733 and the 735.

PHX is a TED station. I have seen mainline aircraft still come here. So swapping a mainline aircraft for a TED aircraft happens, not daily but it happens alot.

It has been rumored that UA was going to adjust the number of F seats on the 319's to mirror the 320 in order to ease the pain of F passengers during equipment subs.

A319 has 120 seats. Ted A32S has 156 seats. So someone didn't get the first class they payed for. I'm sure they got EconomyPlus and were compensated. It also means that 36 possible standby passengers could have gotten were they nned to be. It sounds like it was a better situation that they swapped if the were standbys.

Ted vs. mainline UA flies LAS to IAD daily. Really not too bad. IFE and more bathrooms on board as compared to its LCC competitor. Good seat pitch. and......channel 9!

I haven't heard much about Ted lately, or for a long time for that matter. How are they doing? I for some reason thought that United "folded" Ted.
