Dash8 Gear Collapse At CPH

Sat Oct 27, 2007 3:30 pm

Media says that a Dash8-Q400 just had an incident at CPH.

http://politiken.dk/indland/article407463.ece (in Danish, sorry)

This is the third gear collapse with the Dash8-Q400 for SK since Sept. 9. I guess the fleet has to be grounded again!

Not good for SAS.
Future flights: CPH-BOS; CPH-SVG; CPH-PVG-HKG-MNL-DVO; CPH-CDG; CPH-NRT; CPH-MIA; CPH-PVG

40 pax + 4 crew on board. No one was hurt.

Flight was SK 2868 from Bergen. Right gear collapsed upon landing around 4.53 PM GMT+1.

Still one runway open at CPH. Delays expected.

Unbelievable! How on earth is it possible after all the SK Q400's got checked.
Will SK ground them again?
Fortunately everbody is ok, but how long will this continue to go on?

From SAS website

SAS operates on a full traffic program
Our Dash 8/Q400 aircraft have been inspected, tested and approved by the authorities and are now returning to normal operation. However, a small number of flights will be operated by other airlines for the time being.

SAS regrets any inconveniences caused by the cancellations from the 12th of September to the 14th of October.

The problem is getting suitable replacement aircraft within a reasonable time.

However I can see SAS now will demand an even bigger compensation from Bombardier after they have sold SAS a crap product and I can definately see this ending up in court

I cant see them keeping those planes after this. The pax will refuse to fly on them.

How about ATR72-600 or even A318 (which would ensure better commonality in their fleet).

Sukhoi Superjet!

Why not return the 400's to Bombardier for new ones? Other airlines are not experiencing similar problems with the latest 400's.

No they dont want that. They need a completely new type in their fleet, they should go for some 777 with few 380 just for the sake of it and then end with some Sukhoi super jets and few embraers  Wink

SK needs to do something about those planes. This last incident is too much. Or maybe this is SK way to get rid of Dashes. Crashland every single one of them.3 down 24 to go  Wink

The DHC8-400 seats roughly 70, the A318 roughly 100.

It is probably too big.

I know, but a lot of the routes where the DH4 is(was) operated needs more capacity. I could easily see them fly with the A318. It's even certified to land at LCY from where SK with high demand flies to CPH/ARN/OSL.

If I remember correct SAS was the launch customer for the Q400. Did SAS receive all the first produced
which means the fleet from SAS has been in traffic longer than other carriers Q400?

Hmmmmmmm,

I think it is pretty safe to say that teh Q400 is finished with SAS, not that it has ever been a match made in heaven, from day one SAS had lots of problems with these a/c, moreso than any other carrier.

OK, so the Q400 does not work for SAS, the only vaible replacement is the ATR-72, as RJs are just too high cost, and the last thing SAS needs is yet another single aisle jet.

Quoting EBGflyer (Reply 23):
How about ATR72-600 or even A318 (which would ensure better commonality in their fleet).

Why on earth would they introduce the A318, they have a very suitable jet in that catogory already the Boeing 737-600. It makes more sense to add these as opposed to the A318.

Brian.
Next flights: MAN-ORK-LHR(EI)-MAN(BD); MAN-LHR(BD)-ORK (EI); DUB-ZRH-LAX (LX) LAX-YYZ (AC) YYZ-YHZ-LHR(AC)-DUB(BD)

They already have A319 and A321's. A318 can land at airports with shorter runways such as London City. The 736 can't.. and it's an older type!

LN-RDS in VNO was delivered to SAS on 31-01-2001.
This one, LN-RDI, is the oldest of the three - delivered to SAS on 23-09-2000.

Actually not really. He answered his own question with his question. Different "types". Just because the Dash has gear problems doesn't mean every Boeing, Airbus, and whatever else they have in their fleet are going to have the same problems. The aircraft are built different and maintained differently.

Why is it crap? I think it's more than justified. Three accidents in a month with this one airline on this one aircraft? sounds pretty suspicious to me. Of course all accidents of this nature or ANY mechanical nature are mechanically and technically related. HOWEVER, some are the result of poor maintenance while others may just be failed parts. With that logic, you would claim that AA191 was the fault of the engine mount bolts for not maintaining integrity and eventually breaking.
