Air Disinfection Units On Planes?

Sun Oct 28, 2007 3:13 pm

Very interesting article in todays Sunday Times, these units, in one hour in an enclosed space, can kill 98.5% of germs in the air. "The average person sheds around 300million skin flakes very day into the air, some go through ventilation systems and most settle back into surfaces." Would be nice to get off a plane with less than you got on with.
These units are to be used in hospitals in the UK, do you think they have a use in aircraft?
you don't get a second chance to make a first impression!

I am not sure what the article refers to, maybe you could attach a hotlink to a web version of it. UV lights are also a good possibility because they are not overly space consuming or heavy. But these days when they stop bringing wine bottles on board in favour of weight saving tetra packs, airlines installing even them might not happen until they are required to or someone tries to tie it in with a marketing campaign.

In theory, but why bother? Somewhere between 50% and 80% of the air you get on each cycle is fresh from outside (and totally sterile thanks to going through the engine) and the air is changed far more often than in any home or building.

The newest planes have HEPA filters in the recirculation circuit...that should catch any stray skin flakes (aka dust) before it comes back around.

Tom.
