Is Airbus doing this test flight on behest of Qantas, which will use the A380 on its transpacific flights to LAX as soon as possible?

I would say so, may be there would be some QF crew on board as well perhaps. Especially if as suggested above its next flight after LAX is SYD.

Here's a webpage with photos from the first A380 LAX visit.

Might be an idea to set up another A.net meet during this A380 visit.

Any takers?

The LAX-SYD won't have revenue pax, will it? Surely not.

Possibly some Airbus invited guest, but certainly not revenue passengers.

QF is not scheduled to receive its 1st A380 until August 2008.

According to the article the plane will be flying from MSP.

Also from the article:

Quote:
The A380's landing at LAX will be less complicated this time around because the plane will take off and land on the south airfield, which is now capable of handling the mega-jetliner, thanks to a $330 million renovation project.

I'm surprised by this comment. I thought with the center taxiway, the south airfield (complex) would not be compliant with minimum separation guidelines. Isn't this the reasoning for redesigning the north airfield? Is it not an issue now because the center taxiway on the south airfield is not complete?

Yeah, I wasn't sure if QF might have been doing a one off type of thing with its most valued FF'ers, or what. That'd certainly be the route they would attempt something like that though.

no. QF will however get the opportunity to run a few more tests.

its less complicated because landing on the south side keeps it "out of the way" from the rest of the airport ops. it will not be taxiing immediately to the bradley terminal so no need to close taxiway's or monitor separations as much this time around. less of a headach for all involved.
