Delta Int'l 767-300ER CRT To LCD "upgrades"

Mon Oct 29, 2007 7:33 pm

As everyone should know, as posted on Delta's blog, Delta intends on replacing the CRT screens and projectors on the international 767-300ERs with LCD monitors. Note that I have "upgrades" in quotes, as this isn't really an upgrade in terms of features, but in terms of technology. The CRTs and projectors on the 767-300ERs are losing their quality, and it is about time that they are replaced.

Now, I would like to know when will the first aircraft go in for the mods. I know that the first domestic non-ER 767-300 will get PTVs with AVOD and satellite TV in late November, but I haven't heard anything about when will the first 767-300ER will get the new LCD monitors.

Also, PLEASE do not turn this thread into a flame war on whether Delta should install PTVs on the 767-300ERs or not. Yes, I would also like to see PTVs, but nothing will change Delta's minds no matter how much we gripe about it.

Oh...I thought you were talking about replacing the CRT's with LCD's in the cockpit. Oh well.

No, I was talking about the IFE. Perhaps I should have also mentioned the projectors in the thread title, but unfortunately, A.net doesn't support longer titles. Since when do you find projectors in the cockpit anyway?

I also wonder if only the screens/projectors will be replaced, or will the analog tape video server be replaced by an all-digital system. AA is installing a stripped-down overhead version of the Panasonic eFX system on their 757s and 767-200ERs, which replaces the old CRT screens and projectors with LCDs, and also replaces the analog tape server with digital storage.

It is almost certain that they would go for more reliable & durable digital server. Nothing looks more chintzy than a warbly Beta tape. I think it's amazing they could not afford 1500 lbs for IFE on their 763ERs. Just amazing esp considering they will get winglets. WTF, just put the PTVs in!!

Speaking of 767 upgrades, isn't US putting in new LCDs too this winter, for their 767-200ER fleet? They also probably don't want PTVs, for reasons of cheapness or range.

Weight is not the only concern, the costs of the system are also equally important. Retrofitting an entire fleet of 59 aircraft with AVOD PTVs will cost lots of money for Delta. Most likely when Delta gets some 787s, they will have AVOD PTVs factory-installed.

Good point...I was just 'typing' out loud, I guess.

"are losing their quality"?!?!?!?!?!?! Ummmmm, they lost their quality years ago. The last time I flew transatlantic on Delta (in '04) the CRT's were in terrible condition then and they had just replaced the pneumatic headphones with regular ones...

Some have already received that upgrade, I flew on one earlier this month with the updated LCD screens.

According to Wikipedia, some of the newer ones were delivered with LCD screens. I initially thought that the screens in this photo were LCDs:

I understand that this is a blurry picture, and it was confirmed to me that the screens are CRTs. Note that there is no projection screen though.

If Wikipedia is right, how many of them feature LCDs?

give DL the money to put them on there and make APB being the wiglets out tomorrow and im sure DL will be glad to put them on there! Delta has never said they won't put PTVs on the 763ERs when the get the winglet(im 99% sure they will after the get A) the money and B) all the winglets) so just deal with it for now! Buy a book!

The plan is for 30 of them to get winglets. Maybe Delta will operate a subfleet of them with PTVs, similar to the 737-800s. The 737-800s getting the winglets are the same aircraft that will get PTVs, so maybe Delta could do something similar with the 767-300ERs. Slimline seats might also help offset the weight of the IFE system.
