US Reservation - Need Help!

Tue Oct 30, 2007 4:12 pm

Hey everyone,
I just booked a ticket on US Airways for my best friend and I to go up to Boston in January and had to make the reservation over the phone to use my companion certificate. Everything seemed to go alright but when I checked my e-mail a few minutes later to see my confirmation I noticed that the reservation agent had misspelled my last name!

I immediately called US Airways back and spoke to another agent who was much more helpful. He said that he had put a notation that the agent had misspelled my last name but I am still showing my last name misspelled on my confirmation. I'm just wondering if I have nothing to worry about or should I just go to the ticket counter at CLT and make sure everything is okay?

I would greatly appreciate any advice......I don't want to show up to CLT in January and not be able to get on my flight to Boston because of a typing error.

You will get on proper ID or not. The agents at the counter can make the name adjustment in CLT. Either that or you will get a nice feel up courtsey of DHS.

I will try to talk to a supervisor or smtg until you get some sort of correction done. I don't know, but I'd rather be safe than sorry. If anything, you need some concrete proof that the notation is on record and that you addressed that issue previously. I think they can change it b/c on your travel documents there's usually a clause that states that if your documents aren't correct, you need to contact them immediately. There's very little they can do once you come to the airport. My understanding is that your name must match EXACTLY a government issued identification card. I don't think you going up to the counter (or through security check lines) and say that "someone told me that it was record" will fly.... if i were the ticket agent, i wouldn't let you through. Just my 2 cents.

Your understanding is incorrect. It must match, but the TSA does make allowances for misspellings. If someone comes up to the checkpoint with a ID that says "Charles Brown", but the BP reads "Charlie Brouwne", they'll be allowed to proceed without being made a selectee. If the BP said "Mary Brown", and her ID said "Mary Smith", then odds are that she will not be permitted to travel until corrected.

Check in for the flight and go to the gate. You'll be fine.

I'm sorry, but I don't think it is in security's best interest to allow for exceptions. Where do you draw the line between permissible and non-permissible mistake? The difference between "Erik Smith" and "Eric Smith" can entail the difference between a normal traveller and a wrong-doer. If the traveler sees a mistake, it is his/her responsibility to provide identification to prove his/her identity as soon as possible. Waiting to notify the airline the day of is too much of a risk, especially at an airport as high profile as BOS. I've always been a proponent of the "better safe than sorry" theory.

I am extremely familliar with the SHARES system as I have dated my way around the USAirways/USX Customer service pool in a few cities not to mention my employer uses the system to put the self loading cargo onboard our birds and it is possibly to edit the reservation at the counter. It takes but a few minutes and the problem is resolved.

Unfortuantely it doesn't matter anyway. If you are not checking bags, you don't even need a photo ID to fly. They will just write SSSS on your boarding pass, and you will walk right onto an airplane as soon as you undergo the extra screening. So in that case, it wouldn't matter what the name on your boarding pass was anyway.

Thanks everyone for your pointers........why I go understand that US Airways took responsibility for the spelling error and made a notation I still would feel better if I had the name on the ticket actually changed. All that i'll say is that in my last name there are two M's and where the M's should be the lady who made my reservation put two N's.

Thanks.....would the agents at the ticket counter in CLT be able to change it for me if I were to go in later this week even though i'm not flying to Boston until January?

Most certainly. Show up with your confirmation number and that is that.

I would however see if you couldn't make it in on like a Tuesday or Wednesday or at some off-peak hour, just so they aren't busy and will have more patience with you - plus it's less likely that you'll have to wait in some long line. I'm not sure when the off-peak times are at CLT, though.

This is a joke, right? We're in real trouble if our security relies on people accurately spelling their name, always transliterating foreign names the same way, not changing names when getting married, not exercising the legal right to use a different name, etc. etc.

A zero-tolerance policy for differences in spelling would screw over thousands of people per day.

Thanks....i'll try and get over to CLT next week since its a 17 minute drive from my house and see if they can't physically change the last name on the reservation so that I won't have any problems when I check in for the flight to BOS.

That's a good idea....I don't yet know my work schedule for next week and don't know what day i'll be off but i'll definitely try to make it at a non peak hour.

They can redo the name and if that does not work they can INVOL the ticket to a new PNR and put the correct name in. I believe that the name change option is under CTRL+R which will bring up the RES screen and then it should be able to be fixed. Either way they should be able to fix it with remarks in the PNR or a direct change in the PNR or if all else fails INVOL the ticket and give you a new ticket issued off the old one with the mistake at no additional charge.

Name corrections can be made on reservations, specially if that was an agent error, if you want private message me and I can help you on that, however there is no problem with the mispelling, you can still get to the airport and board, in a domestic flight you can even fly with your nicname on your reservation (ie. Bill instead of William), but if that would give you peace of mind I can help you on that.

When you purchase an airline ticket your name is matched against the entire TSA no-fly list as well as the selectee list automatically. Since the CAPPS program (which processes the name matches) can only distinguish a match by the exact spelling, any errors are turned into selectee status by either the airline or TSA.

So if your ticket has the wrong name on it, YOUR name was not checked against these lists so they will either ask you for your birth date and run a manual check and clear you (assuming you have never threatened a flight attendant or hijacked a plane).

If you don't want to be made a Selectee, then talk to someone about the error. Worst case you will only be a selectee.

My advice, wait till your next trip before smuggling the drugs.
