A380 Could Become 'Flying Mansion'

Wed Oct 31, 2007 9:20 pm

BRUSSELS, Belgium (AP) -- The new Airbus 380 "Superjumbo" has just completed its maiden commercial flight and there are already plans to transform the world's largest passenger plane into the pinnacle of private luxury -- an executive jet.

Two European companies --- Germany's Lufthansa Technik and Switzerland's Jet Aviation -- have announced their intention to convert the enormous airliner into a flying mansion replete with private bedrooms, a movie theater, and a gym fitted with saunas and jacuzzis.

It was even old news when this article was written: http://www.cnn.com/2007/TECH/07/06/luxury.a380/index.html

6000 square feet is larger than most McMansions in the USA, but smaller by far than the actual mansions the people who might possibly own this plane would live in. Those are 35,000 square foot, minimum.

But 6000 square feet is still 3-4 times my house!!!

Well with so many possibilities, it seems very real that the 380 could be the transport for the US president.

I think I heard a rumour to that effect. I wonder how that would be fitted out!

that seams as likely as the President having a Mercedes Limo... sorry, but politics are a b*tch... boeing and unions would fry any politician of that stature for buying non American... not that I agree..

The A380 would make a great platform for a flying hospital.

Such a plane could be a welcome site in areas suffering from natural disasters.

I definitely agree with you here! I do hope that Airbus does make some A380's to be used as medical jets.

As for the topic at hand.....can't wait to see an A380 as a private jet

The USAF tendered an RFP to Airbus for the A380 in both a SAM (Special Air Mission) and ATC (Air Transport Command) role: US Considers A380 As AF1 And C-5 Replacement! (by LifelinerOne Oct 17 2007 in Military Aviation & Space Flight)

Only if the areas affected had an A380 ready airport functioning (which after a natural disaster seems unlikely)

On the topic, there will be private A380's flying around at some point. Whether any of us on here will see what they look like inside is another matter.

and jacuzzis.

I still wonder how they want to keep the Jacuzzi safe. If the planes gets into turbulences and you suddenly have a couple of hundred liters of water floating in the airplane, the journey could be over for ever soon.

There is a hint in a German newspaper that Lufthansa Technik as one of the very few possible outfitters for a VVIP A380 is in talks with "several" customers - not only one. Guess we can expect a few "Flying Palaces" in the air in the next few years.

I would think that you'd have better luck with the Russian planes, simply because they seem to be able to land on anything - short of walking on water and turning jet fuel into wine!

I wouldn't be so sure about the kerosene into wine bit: some of those Russians seem very keen to drink anything that even remotely resembles alcohol...  Silly

Fry? Probably more like hang, draw, quarter, then fry, and them some.

It's usually better to fly in a field hospital after disasters rather than having an aircraft (especially one as big as the A380) taking up valuable ramp space. That way the cargo plane flies in, drops off its load and then takes off again, allowing other disaster relief flights access to the airfield. The other consideration is that most places that have disasters don't have extensive airfield capacity, so they have very limited room to be able to handle disaster relief flights.
