What Is Your Opinion Of NWA's DC-9s And DC-10s?

Wed Aug 23, 2000 1:57 pm

What is your opinion of Northwest's DC-9s and DC-10s? My dad will be flying NWA's DC fleet soon. Please tell me your good and bad experiences; Don't hold back. Will he like it? I myself am not crazy about the 2x5x2 seating. He is flying DTW-JFK in a DC-9 and then JFK-Amsterdam on a DC-10 them Amsterdam to India on a KLM 747-400. He does like the alliance thogh and has heard excellent tigs about both airlines.

Don't know about DC-10's...never flew or worked on one. I've flown interline on NWA DC-9's several times and was very impressed with what a great interior makeover they had ( have ) -- Nicest damn narrowbodies I've been on. As a mechanic who works ( not for NWA ) on DC9's ( among others ), I can offer this: A solid, reliable plane...if not exactly on the leading edge of technology...which may be a good thing.

I've flown on 1 DC-9-10, 2 DC-9-30s, and 1 DC-10-40 with them. The DC-9s are quite nice on the inside. Not too loud as long as you aren't between the engines. Windows, along with everything else was clean. The DC-10 was not quite as clean, and we had a mechanical delay before departing, but it was quickly fixed. Overall, the F/As and gate agents, alnong with all other employees were quite helpful and nice on all my trips with them (about 18).

Been on a DC-9-50 and (2) DC-10-40 with them. The DC-9 was from MEM-MCO, and I must say it was a nice DC-9. The interior looked new, and it was pretty quiet. The first DC-10 was fine, no problems, interior was clean, that was my first time on a DC-10 and it was pretty cool. The second one we had an hour delay because the naviagational system crashed, so they had to replace a part.

About 2 weeks ago I did a YUL-DTW, DTW-ORD, ORD-DTW, and DTW-YUL trip and 3 of the 4 legs were on Northwest DC-9's (-30's and -50's). The fourth leg was on an A320. The A320 was nicest but the DC-9's seemed quite nice inside. They certainly don't look as old as the planes really are due to their interiors being redone. The first two times I sat within the last 4 rows and they are quite loud there due to the two tail mounted engines. However on my last leg I was sitting in front of the wing and the flight was just great and quiet. I would have no hesitation flying their Dc-9's again although I would want to try other planes first.

Cheers,

I have flown plenty of their 10's and 9's. Im not exactly in love with their 9's because Its kind of like CO with their 737's where they fly them everywhere, so they just get kind of boring after awhile. Their 10's are another story though, Every time I fly one its a treat, all of the NW 10's I have flown have been clean and comfortable, the only thing I notice about all their 10's is all of them have some type of coffee smell to them, Its hard to explain.

I had a chance to fly a NW DC-9-14 earlier this month. AA interlined us to NW, CLE-DTW-LAS. Although the flight was only 18 minutes, I must say the interior looks great, it was clean, and the crew was ok. However, any plane feels good when your only sitting down for 25 minutes.

I am very impressed with Northwest's DC9 and DC10 fleet, and would like to add that all of their aircraft are well-maintained. Their DC-10-40 fleet, the oldest types of DC-10s that they operate, flew ontime 88.5 percent of the time in June, an amazing statistic that is a real testament to the maintenance and design of the aircraft as well as the hard work of the people of Northwest Airlines. If your dad gets lucky, he might get a A319 from DTW-JFK and a 747-400 from JFK-AMS, as Northwest often flies these aircraft on those routes. Those are the newest types of airplanes flown by Northwest, and a real treat to fly in. Either way, tell him to have an excellent flight on Northwest and KLM.

This past Sunday I flew on a Northwest DC-9 from ALB to Detroit and the interior was very clean and updated with new seats and storage bins.

Last month i flew on northwest DC10-40 from Seattle-Honolulu and Honolulu-San Francisco. They were not bad. 3 years ago i did Houston to Honolulu and Honoulu back to Houston on Continental i found there craft DC10 to be a little nicer looking and cleaner. But i still have no complantes about Northwest. Great airline and service.(not unless your in Detroit Jan. 1 1999) if your from Detroit you know what i mean.

Several days ago there was adiscussion on here about the longevity of NW's DC-10 fleet and what might or might not replace the DC-10. One person noted that NW had been adding used DC-10s thru 1997. Not sure how many are currently in the fleet.

My guess is that even if they ordered a fleet of replacements tomorrow, (767-400??), you would still be able to fly on a NW DC-10 for a few years.

Been a while since I was on any of their DC-9's. Thought I read where cerian blocks of aircraft would be refitted for stage 3, and the balance retired. Not sure how many of each tho..maybe someone else knows.

I fly NW exclusively! I think that their dc-9's are o.k. I have been flying from ord to msp and msp to mdw. I also fly the nine to mco. Nice planes but a little old for me.

The tens are another story. Although I have not had many flights on them. Msp to oslo, now cancelled, and philly to ams they just seem like really tired planes. somewhat dirty and stale.

From ams to philly the #1 engine had a problem 4 hours into the flight. Scared the hell out of me. So no more excursion flights for this guy. It's straight from msp to ams for me on either KLM 747-300 flight 6055 or NW 747-200. flight 55. depending on the time of the year.

Good luck

NWA's DC9s are great. They have some of the nicest interiors I've seen....I think the interior is the same style as the MD-90 jets..the DC-10s are clean but dated looking.....

As for retirement schedule of these aircraft, they are still evaluating replacement options for the DC-10, and the DC-9s....the DC9-10s will be phased out gradually in favor of more regional jets, and some of the DC9-50s will be replaced by A319s. Any new A320 craft will replace the aging 727s, which do not have new interiors....bottom line, Northwest will be flying some sort of DC-9 for at least five or so more years, maybe eight or nine years....

NWA DC-9's, Solid work horse, crampy and a little old, but very solid. NWA DC-10's, Love them, hope they never get rid of them. I fly MSP to LAX on the 10 2 times a month, they are comfortable and solid.

I just flew on a DC-10 on flight 308 from LAX to MSP about two weeks ago, I found it cramped when trying to sleep but that was right after I had an entire midsection row to myself on a Qantas 747-400 from Sydney to LAX. I've flown on many Northwest DC-10s, I perfer the 30 series which I flew DTW to CDG and LGW to DTW about 4 years ago. I flew on one Northwest DC-9 flight from DTW to MSP but that was four years ago and I didn't like the plane interior. Northwest should replace their DC-10s with A330 aircraft because it looks good in Northwest colors and it can do the same work that their DC-10s currently does.

I haven't flown NW much, but the few flights I have had were nice. I've flown STL-MSP-STL, STL-MEM-STL and they were all operated by the DC-9. Not sure exactly of the series but I was quite impressed with the interiors. I figured, UGH, great a DC-9. But the interior looked better than on new airliners I have flown on. I say kudos to NW for keeping up the interiors on their 9's. They are bright and well clean. And I just love those handle bar things on the bins..

It's As Good As New

Mon Aug 28, 2000 8:41 pm

I've flown NW for the last two years of summer and Fall/Winter. I've experianced thier DC-9-32s and their DC-10-30s. I flew all their DC-10-30s from the Osaka-Kuala Lumpur route and the DC-9s on the Detroit-Memphis runs........great planes, the interior were very pleasing, clean and looks just brand new (inspite of their ages). I wouldn't hesitate in recomemding your dad on one of NWs DCs flight.

I had a several bad experiences with NWA in the Pacific/Asian area during the mid to late 80's (possibly the topic for a small novel) and was somewhat skeptical when my travel agent booked me on a DC-10-40 trip from LGW to BOS. That flight went a long way to restoring my faith in NWA. Nice clean aircraft, attentive service and edible food. Got in on time too. Overall quite a pleasant experience. I have flown NWA DC-9's from OMA-MSP and back and the only complaint I have is the legroom in coach (I'm 6'6" with the majority in the leg department).

Ive been on several DC-9 flights on Northwest (I live in Detroit). The interior makeovers make the plane feel new again, you would think you were on a completely new of the line MD-90 while inside. Just as NKP S2 said, the DC9 is a solid built airplane, I frequently fly DTW-SRQ on a DC9-31(NW1133,1130) and have never had a bad flight! The DC-10-40's although very roomy, are starting to show signs of their age. They really need an interior make over or replacement sometime soon.
