NYC To BOS Price Difference

Thu Nov 01, 2007 11:37 am

I was doing a price check on Expedia from NYC (JFK,LGA,EWR) to BOS and found that CO has the most expensive airfare at $697 and JetBlue has the lowest at $227 while other carriers like DL, and AA are a little bit more than JetBlue but not as much as CO. I searched to travel within 2 weeks, why the big price difference?  scratchchin

JFK is traditionally the cheapest airport for BOS-JFK. With EWR, as others have said, it's the CO monopoly. For LGA, that's the preferred business traveler airport, so they'll often be willing to spend big bucks for convenience. With JFK, it's a bit further away and not as convenient, plus the LCC is on the route. DL and AA often price match with B6 on JFK-BOS, but really restricts the cheapo fares at times that connect with international arrivals (before DL upgraded the mid-afternoon JFK-BOS flight to a mainline plane (currently an MD-80 but has been a 757) it was impossible to get a cheapo fare on the CRJ.

The difference in prices between CO and UA which follows CO with a price of $399 r/t , is about $298. Why pay the extra $298 for a 40 minute trip?

You forgot Amtrak.  duck

Downdown to downtown in just over three and a half hours; fares from $59 on (slower) Regional services or $88 in (business/first class only) Acela Express. Personally I hate flying short hops, so I'll take longer and enjoy a meal and some work time en route  Smile

Because you are pricing a less than 7 DAY advance and calling it "within 2 weeks" maybe? CO only has full Y seats for sale 7 days out or less on this route (which is expensive but fully refundable/changeable) I agree that pricing is dumb, considering so many seats are not full, but I guess CO is looking more to book BOS customers who are connecting?

7-14 days out (which is within 2 weeks) I can find 1/2 the price.

If you try leaving Nov 9 and returning the 12th, EWR-BOS-EWR I found $342 roundtrip on every single flight on both days.

Same holds for BOS-EWR-BOS.

And wow, if i choose Mon 12th to depart and return on the 15th? $292 roundtrip, again for every single flight.

They must have somehow determined that less than 7 days out, selling full Y seats is the way to go. Maybe someone at CO could enlighten?

AND you'll save the times for (a) the trip out to the airports, (b) the time spent in security hoping you don't have 3.5 ounces of liquids in your carry-on, (c) the time spent on a ground-stop, and (d) the time spent waiting for a gate at the arrival airport.

Take the money you'll save (Amtrak fares are usually very reasonable!) and have a nice meal before leaving!!

As much as I love flying, I cannot for the life of me understand how anyone would willingly fly as an O&D passenger between these closely located cities. Time, money, and frustration later, and you STILL haven't arrived any faster.

yep, growing up outside NYC, I never once flew to Washington or Boston. It was always trains or driving.

I suppose that if you are in a company limo and working during the whole drive to the airport, then working at the airport, then working on the plane, maybe it makes sense. But then the train works just as well there.

And if you don't have work to do, spending 4 hours in a car is cheaper than driving to the airport, waiting for your plane, flying, getting transport at the other end. And timewise, it's a wash when the airports have delays.
