Royal Jordanian Flights To LAX

Sun Nov 04, 2007 4:33 am

I just found out that Royal Jordanian had flights between LAX and AMM in the 80's using L1011. How long did this service last, and was L1011s the only jet used on this route? Also was this non stop service?

Wow! What a long flight in an aircraft that size. Can't wait for the responses on this one! Did RJ fly anywhere else?

As a side note we still get an occasional private A340 here for a VIP.....

how about the Qatari A330 or the Saudi MD-11, I heard they fly out here just to do a little shopping in Beverly Hills.

I remember seeing them in MIA in 1988 I think.
Can I have a mojito on this flight?

Not particularly, but that flight could not have gone non-stop.

Pretty much. Likely South Coast Plaza too. The 747SPs show up as well.

The RJ flights stopped in AMS. I dont have my schedules handy but I believe they were LAX-JFK-AMS-AMM and/or LAX-AMS-AMM. During this period there were flights to MIA, LAX, JFK, IAH, ORD and maybe others such as YYZ, YMX. I have the timetable with days of week and schedules but if I remember it was only 2x or 3x weekly.

The flights to LAX started in 1984 and were operated via FRA or LHR. Royal Jordanian was named "ALIA" at that time. Thier name was changed in 1986.
They also flew to IAH and YYZ in the late 80s.

I find it interesting with the large Middle-Eastern population in Los Angeles, and there are no direct flights to LAX from the Middle East. What gives???

LAX-AMM nonstop is 12260km/7617mi . I doubt RJ's A342 could fly the distance nonstop both ways without restrictions. Only an A345 or B772LR could do it without any problem.

I know this thread is about Royal Jordanian, but I was asking about the other carriers, Qatar, Etihad, Emirates.

I flew RJ's L-1011-500s many times in the late 80s. The route was LAX-ORD-VIE-AMM and vice versa.

Never LHR nor FRA.

No see below.

 checkmark  Indeed.

However for periods there were slight changes including use of 742 and routing via AMS especially in the first few years.

Well we've had El Al successfully serve Los Angeles since the very early 1980s.

But I assume you are referring to Arab carriers, which indeed have been pretty poor showing at LAX. Outside of Royal Jordanian and then Egyptair which managed to serve LA for most of the 80s and 90s (with quite poor loads), there really has not been a scheduled Arab carrier presence at the airport - tough we do see plenty of VIP aircraft.
Might be interesting to note that Royal Air Maroc did open a LA sales office in in Beverly Hills circa 2000 in anticipation of launching service, however 9/11 killed those dreams.

At the end of the day, the travel needs for Middle Eastern destined folks are pretty well covered by the European carriers such as KLM, Lufthansa, Air France, Swiss whom offer good connectivity and frequencies via their hubs.

If I am not mistaken, RJ's Los Angeles service, along with Toronto and Miami, ended during the Gulf War.

Yep, and the Arab population in LA isnt as great as the upper Midwest or New York. Although there is a significant Egyptian/Palestinian contigency in the Pasadena area, and a significant population of Iranian's in the Socal area, most of which who have severed ties with Iran right N1120A? I havent heard of too many Iranian Jews going back to Iran?

I remember loading bags into the LD-3's for Royal Jordanian at LAX. It was an L-1011-500 and it stopped in JFK. I remember they always had a security agent from RJ observing us load the bags for this flight. It left from TBIT and we had to go over there to work the bagroom. It was always a good day when you got assigned RJ. You loaded 3 cans max. Most pax boarded in JFK. The aircraft was ornate inside with a prayer shrine always pointed toward Mecca.
