Continental Micronesia Old Colors

Mon Nov 05, 2007 7:37 am

Bonjour,

I'm looking for some info and if posssible pics about CO micronesia fleet and colors in the 70s-80s.

*How did the first planes were painted? (F-27 and DC6B).Did they wear the gold, orange and red colors?
*how many DC-10 and 727 were positioned on the CO micronesia network and did they wear the micronesian flag?

If someone has any pics about these oldies...

Thank you very much.

As far as I know, the CS colors in the 70's and 80's was the old oblong insignia from CO and same color scheme. The only distinction was the aircraft had a small flag toward the rear of the aircraft that had the words 'Air Micronesia' over a mini-version of the American flag except that the blue portion of the flag was the Trust Territories half and had six stars in a circle. They never actually had the flag of the Federated States of Micronesia (which is just essentially the Trust Territories flag with two stars removed) despite their name. Hope this helps somewhat...

Here's a picture of Air Mike's second jet aircraft.

And here, you can see what was their fleet until 1997, last time when the site was updated.

When I arrived on Guam in 1972 - the single B727 Combi was painted the same colors as the one above - except with the red meatball.

It had the words "Air Micronesia" in the same font and size on the cabin as the jet in the photo above. The word Continental was not visible on the aircraft.

There were 10 or 12 rows of seats - from the wing exits aft. The aircraft was boarded from the rear stairs. With the forward compartment being cargo.

I don't remember if the meatball was by the name - I just remember the US flag was at the back by the engines and the TTPI flag was by the name.

The most distinctive thing about the aircraft was the rock guards on the gear. At that time most of the island strips were still crushed coral gravel. The paving was a US Seabee Civic Action project in the 70's if my memory is working correctly.

The aircraft went to a maintenance check in late 1973 - during that time CMI flew a standard US paint COA B727, and the DC-6 did most of the cargo flights.

When the B727 Combi returned in early 1974 the name painted on the aircraft was "Continental Air Micronesia".

After leaving in 1974, my next visit to Guam was 1983 - and I flew CMI from Narita to Guam. That B727 was not a combi aircraft and had Micronesia in the airline name on the aircraft - but I don't remember the exact paint scheme.

they changed to the red meatball the same time that Continental did ...

Air Micronesia (correct name before it became Continental Micronesia) did operate the only CO DC-6 to wear the meatball scheme ... nicknamed "The Granny Goose"

here is one of their 721's in the late 1970s in Palau

here is Palau's airport in the 70s

Thank you very much. DID747

RE the DC-6 - here is a decal set sold for plastic models - with the black meatball

I found one photo of the DC-6 a few years ago on the web - but cannot find it now.

In 1985 at LAX, Continental ran out of black paint and a aircraft was ready to go back into service, except for the fact that the meatball on the tail had not been painted. There was a lot of red paint however, and a decision was made to paint the meatball with the red paint. It was done and a lot of people liked it, a few of the older mechs, who probably saw service in WW2 in the pacific, hated it, said it reminded them of the Japanese Rising Sun. It was a cheap alteration, a lot of people did like it, and it looked different, so it stayed until the present day paint job.

Do you have another copy of the pic with the CO 721. The pic you put up is reversed (the cargo door is on the wrong side of the plane)?
