New Southwest Routes Likely Nov. 8. Predictions?

Mon Nov 05, 2007 8:31 pm

November 8th will open up the next schedule, so I'm thinking (as well as others) that their will be the usual new route announcements.

My guesses:

Strong possibility:

DEN

DEN-LAX
DEN-SAN
DEN-AUS (second flight)

Possible:

DEN-SAT
DEN-STL
DEN-PHL
DEN-PDX
DEN-MSY
DEN-FLL
DEN-SFO

SFO

Likely:

SFO-PHX
SFO-SEA
SFO-HOU

Possible:

SFO-BUR
SFO-SNA (slot permitting)
SFO-ONT
SFO-DEN
SFO-PDX
SFO-SLC

MSY

Possible:

Additional flight(s) to PHX, MDW, BWI.

Also Possible:

MSY-AUS
MSY-SAT
MSY-PHL
MSY-DEN
MSY-MCI

MDW

Possible:

MDW-BOI
MDW-OKC
MDW-TUL
MDW-PBI
MDW-JAX
MDW-ELP

Also Possibilities:
PHX-BOI
FLL-ALB
FLL-MHT
FLL-PIT
FLL-ORF
MCO-OMA
BWI-OMA
HOU-PIT

Should be a good start. Obviously, a lot of those won't happen in the next announcement, but I still bet some of those are announced. These are just guesses from my knowledge of WN and where they fly, the current trends of flights and connecting the dots, and what I see working.

I'm sure I will get a ton of crap for sounding like a WN route freak, and that xxx-xxx is unreasonable, or why xxx-xxx cities aren't in my list.

And no, I have no information internally on WN as to what will be announced.

Have fun guessing.  Wink

What about some PIT expansion?

PIT-BNA
PIT-FLL (on your list)
PIT-HOU (also on your list)

Another US drawdown seems to provide another opportunity...

Very interesting.

That article (which I had not read before I posted this thread) basically confirmed my bets on heavy DEN expansion, which is why I listed DEN first with several destinations possible/likely.

The only thing holding them back that I see is lack of gates. Any DEN members have any idea if they are able to get more gates? IIRC they only have 5 now with 56 daily flights.

The new schedule books are already out. No new service to PIT. They said we would have 1 or 2 more flights at the beginning of the year. No talk on what cities. I would think it would be additional frequencies to cities already served, not new destinations. Maybe a new BWI or MDW frequency.

Hopefully they'll add a BWI frequency. Their timing never works right for me to fly to/from PIT. Does anyone how how the LF (and Yields) between BWI and PIT? Right now they flies 3x a day (2x on Sundays).

And how's BWI to/from Denver doing so far? With Frointier flying to DCA and IAD, I could imagine the flight should be okay.

DL & B6 get some competition on this route. Is it possible in the 5-10 year window that SLC will feature a similar 3 way battle between DL, B6 & WN as DEN currently has with UA, F9 & WN? Especially as a new airport master-plan starts to take shape and more mainline gates become available?

ALB-FLL has 199 daily.

And that's only to FLL, and only during the slow travel period. During peak travel, South Florida-Albany has over 450 passengers per day. I believe that Albany is the biggest domestic O&D market from South Florida not served non-stop.

Southwest has been slowly adding some logical gaps to the FLL route network in the past year with Buffalo, Providence, and Raleigh. I would hope to see Albany, Albuquerque, Austin, Manchester, Norfolk, and San Antonio added in due time. They all have TPA and MCO service, and adding FLL would be only logical.

ALB-FLL would be great in the winter time, but in the summer, I'm not so sure.

As far as ALB-PHX, MHT-PHX is doing above expectations. So, I'd think ALB-PHX would do well.

However, with oil pushing $100 a barrel, and WN leaning away from transcons, I'm not sure.

Who knows.  Smile

I could see WN 2x daily on DEN-OMA eventually. They could grab anywhere from a 1/3-1/2 of the O&D and fill both flights. But, can WN grab that much? Who knows. I believe UA and F9 adjust capacity accordingly, so I would think the flights do decent, carrying a lot of both O&D and connecting.

United averages 85% to 90% and Frontier a little less...around 70% to 75%. The vast majority of these are connections. United and frontier used to routinely start flights at $290 roundtrip. Now they seem to start around $220-$240. For an easy 540 mile drive (7 hours), most people, including myself drive this instead of flying for that price. If southwest came with 4 daily flights, they would lower the fares to $120 roundtrip and generate a ton more passengers (50% more?). I would now fly it instead of driving it.

In addition, this would make connections to the cities like SLC and ABQ easier.

South Floridians flock to Saratoga Springs in the summer time. It's a summer retreat and popular second-home location for people in Miami and Fort Lauderdale, and Albany is the main gateway. The market is still 250+ O&D in the summer.

For $34/hr, I'd rather fly. My time is worth more. Plus wear and tear on my car, fuel, and the exhaustion of a 7 hr drive. $240 is a bargain.

I've flown DEN-BWI-DEN on WN a number of times in the past year or so, and it is usually perhaps 75% full. This morning, though... they had all of 3 people in the 'B' boarding group, so the gate agent announced for them to join the A group, and called for "all passengers" for the flight to board. Surprisingly light for a Monday morning.

Frontier discontinued DEN-IAD quite some time ago, but pretty much packs the DEN-DCA-DEN flights.  Smile

My bet is they cut another flight or two out of CLE. It's been a slow trickle down, eliminating PHX and a BWI frequency the last go 'round. MDW used to have 9 frequencies, now only 7. BNA 4, now 2. The reason I thing is that CO has been slowly but steadily building the hub into more of a fortress, taking away share from WN and the others.

It has to. I've used it several times to look at traffic on routes that I know aren't served non-stop. 432 is a pretty low number for a route that sees five UA non-stops a day on mainline equipment and four with F9 using their own metal and RJs. Don't get the idea that faremeasure is totally accurate...

Quoting SLCUT2777 (Reply 38):
They already compete with both DL and HP+US on SLC-LAS and SLC-PHX.

I would love to see these routes come to Omaha but I do wonder how well Southwest would do on a BWI route with Midwest flying to DCA and a loyal and strong FF base in town.

Very true. I think a once daily non-stop MCO would work very well though. Heck, if FSD, DSM, and CID can support SFB, OMA can easily support a MCO flight.

New Southwest Routes Likely Nov. 8. Predictions?

It has to. I've used it several times to look at traffic on routes that I know aren't served non-stop. 432 is a pretty low number for a route that sees five UA non-stops a day on mainline equipment and four with F9 using their own metal and RJs. Don't get the idea that faremeasure is totally accurate...

I believe that Faremeasure tracks O/D passengers between a given city pair (not just nonstop flights). It does not include passengers who are flying from LAX to OMA that are connecting through DEN.

SFO-OAK

This is your captain speaking. Sit back. Don't get to comfortable, and enjoy our 3 minute flight to OAK.

We will be offering a modified inflight service on this leg. You will receive a modified bag of peanuts with exactly 7 peanuts in there and a complementary 4 ounce bottle of water or soda.

Possible, but I doubt it's very far up the list.

It should be. It can't get more obvious than PVD-RSW. I still can't believe WN hasn't already jumped on this.

Lots of talk about TransCon and long haul in this thread, I thought WN was moving back to the old 1-2-3 stops plan.

Any DEN members have any idea if they are able to get more gates? IIRC they only have 5 now with 56 daily flights.

They are now using Midwest Airlines' gate (C48) when it's not being used.

Well, considering how long it took them to jump on FLL-BUF and FLL-PVD, it might be a while.

Just a little info on the SFO front:

Gate 23 opened this week which brings WN to 3 active gates

Gate 21 is close to being opened, this will bring active gates to 4, which is what was planned. With the start of LAX this weekend, they are at 26 daily. At an average of 10 flights per gate daily, they have room for 14 more flights when 21 opens.

SFO-DEN looking promising
SFO-PHX likely
SFO-HOU my wish list flight
