Longest Route On A340-600

Tue Nov 06, 2007 9:11 pm

Is JFK-HKG the longest existing commercial scheduled route for a A340-600? Time and mileage? I believe it is.

Any info?

The longest route would surely be LHR-HKG-SYD by Virgin Atlantic.

Actually it's more like the longest nonstop flight for the A346. As far as direct flights are concerned, I agree that LHR-HKG-SYD is the longest.

I am sure he meant nonstop flight...

But, CX operates one of the longest routes--as well as EY (AUH-Toronto) and QR (DOH-IAD)

Is JFK-HKG operated all year around, any restrictions or exceptions?

Has the A340-600 become a stable workhorse?

All 3 A340-600s will be returned to ILFC next year... CX is launching the second daily nonstop flight to NYC using B777-300ER... with the current daily flight will switch to B777-300ER when enough aircrafts arrived..!!

Are there any weight restrictions with the A346 on the longer legs? I understand that this was a bit of a problem on the A345s. Do the T7s have similiar limitations too?

So this is probably the longest distance, but doesn't seem to be the longest time scheduled. Is this because of JFK taxi delays, stronger headwinds on the more northerly route, or both? Also, does JNB-IAD operate non-stop or does that way stop in Accra or some place like that?

JNB-IAD has a refuelling stop in DKR. The hot and high conditions in JNB do not allow a northbound non-stop with meaningful payload.

Not the longest but a nice one : MUC-GRU 6110mi / 5309nm

FRA-MNL is longer, but makes a stop in CAN.

I flew this sector in August and the Captain said our take off weight was 300t. The flight was not full so I cannot say for sure how much this flight is weight restricted. MTOW for the 346 is 380t.

I did the GRU-MUC leg in July with LH and that was a 343 - unfortunately - I'd love to have flown a 346. Are you sure they use their 346's for this route?

Some airlines seem to be very happy with the A346. Whilst many airlines only have fleets of A346 in the single figures, Lufthansa have one of the largest fleets currently at 17 with deliveries still coming. I know that registration number D-AIHV has already been assigned to serial number 897 not yet built. That will bring the fleet to 20 and I believe orders will bring the fleet eventually to 24. The A346 seems to have found great favour with Lufthansa. The A346 is personally my favourite airliner from an aesthetic point of view. I have flown the LH FRA-CAN-MNL route and also QR LHR-DOH, all with A346 and very much enjoyed the flights.

Virgin Atlantic, I believe have the largest fleet at 19 A346 with 6 orders and options on another 13. That will be a fleet of 25 and if options taken, a total of 38.

I think that passengers ratings must be high on this type for LH and VS to continue to expand their A346 fleets in such a way.

Some airlines seem to be very happy with the A346.

Because it's not a bad aircraft. It has longer range, better efficiency, and vastly more cargo capacity than the 747-400s it was intended to replace. Unfortunately for Airbus, Boeing hit a tape-measure home run with the 777-300ER, the extent of which was not even apparent to Boeing until the plane was in flight testing. But it's expensive to switch fleets -- the 777-300ER's advantage over the A340-600 is not sufficient to justify an airline's introduction of a whole new fleet type.

We are, however, seeing those airlines which operate both types phase out their A340-600s in favor of 777-300ERs.

Personally, I find the 346 too long.... the 345, which is not nearly as good an aircraft, is a better looker. But it is fascinating and fantastic to stand at the front of a 346 cabin and look all the way down the aisle to the back. (The 747-8I is even longer and will be even more fun in this respect.)

The 380t MTOW is for the A346IGW. I believe the A346's SA has are limited to 368t MTOW. A TOW of 300t would still be below MTOW though.

It couldn't have really been weight restricted in any way then, unless runway conditions at IAD were poor and they needed to leave 68t short of MTOW.

I don't think the A340-600 has a tanks problem where it tanks out before it hits MTOW in most conditions.
