JNB - JFK July 1983 On SA -- 74?

Wed Nov 07, 2007 4:33 am

I was talking to a friend of mine the other day and we got talking about aircraft types we'd flown.

We got talking about the 747 ... and he mentioned he hasn't been on the 747SP. That got me thinking -- I don't know if I've ever been on one ... I know I flew to JFK on SAA in July 1983, and it was on a 747. Would it likely have been a -200 or an SP? Does anyone know?

Also, flying back, we flew BA, Washington DC - LHR (end August), and LHR - HRE - JNB (end Sept) in the same year -- those were also on a 747 ... I'm guessing they would have been on 747-200s, right?

It would have been an SP. Do you remember if it stopped in Abijan? I flew from JNB to JFK in the July of 83! Can't remember the actual date though. We may have been on the same flight!  Wow!

We stopped at SID for a refuel.

I flew on July 16th -- I was 11 years old at the time!

It could have been a 74L, 74M or 742. All three types were used, depending on the day of the week, to JFK during the 80's.

Looks as if it was a 742. Did you go via CPT as well?

Nope, direct JNB - SID - JFK.

It was a helluva routing: JNB - SID - JFK (change terminals to UA DC-10) - SFO ... mother would have vetoed the trip if another stop had been included.

The SAA flight could have been an SP or 200- SAA and Qantas were famous for last minute aircraft substitutions.

As for BA, most likely a 747-136 IAD-LHR, but LHR-HRE-JNB definately a 747-236.

Thanks ETA -- so it's likely I've been on a -100 as well ... thought I'd missed those. That makes the -300 the only variant I can say for sure I haven't been on Big grin

ABJ was a stop on the LHR flight, not JFK.

I don't the 74M's had arrived by 83 had they ? Can't remember.

ZS-SAS and ZS-SAR joined the fleet in November 1980. SAS crashed into the Indian Ocean 20 years ago this month  Sad

Didn't ZS-SAR also crash in the USA a couple of years ago (after being re registered) while flying as a cargo plane?

Think it was on take off
