Major New SWA RR Changes Announced

Wed Nov 07, 2007 5:34 pm

http://www.swabiz.com/new_landing.html

Too much to put on here, but:
- RR A-List (Elite-like) created for members flying more than 32 o/w per year
- Business fares added with additional flexibility and no-up flight changes
- New Freedom (rule buster) awards (but with blackout dates)

I think this will be a good addition. This will make business travelers that appreciate frequency and being able to hop on any flight with no extra charges. It is often difficult to switch flights at the airport if you have to pay to switch flights. Often times companies take care of the ticket, but make it difficult to expense things like flight changes at the airport. Going for a fully flexible ticket up front is easier.
If you have never designed an airplane part before, let the real designers do the work!

Business folks currently on WN already booked the Y fare usually which allowed changes without paying the fare difference or anything.

I'm excited about the changes! I think it's ABOUT TIME that our frequent business travelers, and frequent flyers in general, get something more in return! Along with these changes comes new uniforms for ALL customer contact employees rolling out 4th quarter of 2008, and more enhancements are on the way to inflight service. To our loyal travelers THANK YOU for choosing Southwest Airlines, I hope you enjoy the changes to come, and to those YET to experience Southwest, please, come give us a try!

I'll be flying Southwest the next time I'm on the mainland. WN (AQ interisland also) have NEVER assigned me a middle seat....AA, UA, DL, US, B6, HA, US and AQ (trans-pac) have. Depends on how you look at it.

Well I wonder how hard it will be to get low A passes now that the FFs get an automated system where they get first dibs on the BPs, as well as folks who pay an extra $20 (?) on flights get preferred BPs as well. Not that it matters much - an A15 still wont be that bad.

I'm curious if I'll get automatically checked in as a companion pass if my RR friend is on the A-list.

Ok, I have no idea where the original post went but guess this is the replacement.

Like I said over there, I have read through the newsletter and all the rules and regs of the new policy and cannot find out if we get credit for the flights already taken. I have met the 16 round trip requirement in past 4 or 5 months so will I be eligible for the benefit starting tomorrow or does everyone start at zero?

From the email I got...

"Log into your MySouthwest® account on southwest.com tomorrow [11/8] to see how close you are to making it on the A-List. Members who qualify for the A-List as of November 8, 2007, will be receiving notification either by postal mail or e-mail within 3 to 5 days."

Already did because I had to for company business and had to be there by a certain time. Once is more then enough for me. I'll stick to my own airlines flights even if it means getting there later or making an extra stop.

You can't beat the price. I fly to LAX on NZ then pick up a SWA flight to IND. If you make the booking with NZ or UA, they make you wait at least 2.5hrs in LAX for customs (and 1hr is only necessary if you know how to run). And after 2.5hrs its the "blackout period" and I wouldnt end up getting home untill the next day.

Sorry to hear we weren't on our game when you flew us. Everyone has good/bad experiences and WN isn't for everyone. Some people think we're not a "real" airline too, so to each his own. Many people go INTO the experience thinking negatively, and thus are let down, it's no surprise. Best wishes in your future travels though!

8. Reserved boarding privileges will only be provided for A-List Members. If an A-List Member is traveling on a multiple-passenger reservation, reserved boarding privileges will not be provided for non-A-List Members in the same reservation. For A-List Members who are also Companion Pass Holders, reserved boarding privileges will not be provided for the Member’s designated Companion unless he/she also is an A-List Member.

Ah, ok. So wait a second. Most gate agents I've run into don't have problems boarding groups of people that are together (me and him), even if we don't have the same boarding passes (if he has a B and I have an A, or the other way around).

Does that also apply to the new boarding process? I mean what if you're a parent and have A19, 21 and 24 for you and your two kids? Do you get in the 16-20 group? What about a couple thats A19 and A21?

I'd love to, but I have yet to be O&D between two cities both served by Southwest (i.e. my O&Ds are between MSP-PVR, MSP-WAS, MSP-PHX, PHX-COS, and MSP-PAR). But I'm going into business so I imagine that I'll get the chance someday (unless I'm forced to fly a firm's preferred carrier) and I look forward to it. Nice that they are making some changes - gotta stay innovative to stay profitable in business in the long-term!

Freshlove has a major chip on his shoulder when it comes to us, you are not going to change him nor do we really want him, considering how he feels about WN. Let him stay with US where he fits right in.

No. You can either save the other person a seat or board with that person in their place in line. To maintain the integrity of the Business Select product and the A-List group it will be strictly limited to only those eligible.

This was my 1st time on WN, as I usually fly my own carriers flights to get where I need to go, so I guess I am used to their process. I prefer assigned seating so that didn't give me a good feeling not knowing which seat I was going to get. The honey roasted peanuts were good though.

Wow...big thumbs up to WN for this improvement. The improvements for business passengers are huge here - the A-List is akin to a real elite status on an airline (Companion Pass at 100 Credits is a real good deal, but there aren't that many of them and it's pretty hard to earn 100 credits/year); the A boarding passes pretty much guaranteed (unless you are a last minute ticket buyer) are a nice perk to have, and the BusinessSelect Fares are basically first class treatment (except for the seat of course...). Some big improvements to Southwest would have me even consider to start flying them...

Big thumbs up to WN on this one for making the product much better for frequent flyers.

I believe you get everything you have flown a year ago, looking at my account it has taken the last 9 flights I flew on SWA, and shows I am 23% on the way to my A List.

Maybe I'm just being thick, but I don't understand how this priority boarding thing is going to work. With the old system it would have been easy. WN could have either reserved X A seats for elites, or just given every elite an A seat on top of those who got it by checking in. But now, I don't get it. Will they reserve the first X seats for elites? Give away every Y A seats to elites? It seems like they're deliberately concealing how they're planning to do it, which is very un-WN (and frankly, as someone who flies WN quite a lot but NOT 32x/year, makes me LESS likely to give them my business).

If you look at the rules and regs, WN cuts off the A-list/Business Select BPs off at 36 hours before the flight. So I would assume in the 12 hours between then and the time when everyone can get their BP, they run the programs to go in and see how many As they have to reserve for A-list/BS customers and then will put that as the position everyone else starts at when the 24-hour mark comes around.

I just rebooked a few flights (date changes) and decided to cancel/rebook so I could get on the A-list. Not sure if I had to do that but wanted to be on the safe side. The question is, if I am the first A-lister to purchase the ticket, am I A-1? If there are 20 A-listers who buy tickets are we A1 - A20 or does it go backwards (A-60 down to A-40) or some other combination?

Know it sounds petty but one of my teammates who travels almost every week as well is 6'8" and really likes that emergency row. So if he get first in line now, he is happy. If not, he still will check in 24 hours in advance. If he does, does it override his assigned A position or is he locked into a number?

These "improvements" seem to address the "Rapid" half of RR. Where is the improvement to the rewards? There are still no fare or status bonuses for these so-called WN "elites".

A transcon on WN earns the same credits as a OAK-LAX flight.  Yeah sure

There actually is a fare bonus; the "Business Select" fare earns 2 credits for trips over 750 miles and 1.25 credits for trips under 750 miles.
