DL To Start MSY-BOS Saturday Nonstop Service

Thu Nov 08, 2007 1:13 pm

Well, Saturday-only service is a start. I'd imagine it will go daily eventually. Again, I have to tip my hat to DL for expanding service from New Orleans. Just a few years ago, DL service to MSY was down to ATL/CVG/DFW only. Now, DL flies nonstop to ATL/CVG/SLC/MCO/LGA/LAX/BOS.

*DL 5076 /FAY 6 MSYBOS 1600 2010 CR9 0

*DL 5077 /FAY 6 BOSMSY 0830 1101 CR9 0

The CR9 seems like the right sized a/c for this market. Looking at the DL timetables for that period, I'm not sure where that plane will be coming from to make up the 4:00pm departure to BOS. I'm sure the schedules will be twinked some between now and then.

These days, I guess whining about the aircraft size takes a back seat to the fact that DL is connecting two dots on the map that really ought to be connected. Bravo for a route that should do well, seeing that it's a Saturday-only run.

BOS to New Orleans in an RJ? I'd rather take the E-190 instead of the CR9, thanks...

Yeah, I would too, but B6 hasn't taken the plunge in this market yet.

You know a few years ago, I would have sort of been dissapointed had I seen a plane smaller than say a 737 on this route. But nowadays I guess it's pretty much par for the course. Once a week nonstop on a CR9 is better than no nonstops.

Would you rather take a CR9 nonstop and spend 2-ish hours or connect and spend 5-ish hours? Cut the complaining and just be glad that the service is offered.. There are a LOT of other places that would gladly take a CR9.. sheesh.

Some service is better than no service, I agree, but I would still like the E-190. I've always preferred it over the CR9. I realize DL doesn't fly it and it's just wishful thinking. Don't let my personal feelings on the aircraft let you think that I don't like the idea of the route.  Wink

How many times have you flown on either of these aircraft to be able to compare them? With which airlines?

I think the flight will do well not only on a Saturday only basis, but if it went daily too.

This is great news for both Boston and New Orleans. It's about time someone jumped on the route after AA left it vacant.

I think it will go daily eventually. A CR9 really shouldn't be that hard to fill. The times are pretty good for cruise ship passengers taking a cruise out of N.O, as well.

It's too bad B6 didn't jump on this route, although I still think it is a good possibility, especially when you look at what JFK is going to be going through.

I've flown on E-190s for JetBlue several times, and I've been on a CR9 twice (both US airways trips). I guess I just prefer the cabin overall on JB's E-190s. But to be fair I was on these for fairly short trips (less than two hours). And the CR9 is better than a lot of other stuff, but I just prefer the E-190.

I'm not saying the route is bad for Delta. Just that if I had my choice I'd have an E-190. :V

I'm happy to see it. I'dve figured they'd put the CR9 into LGA and given BOS that CR7 or a CRJ.

Guessing this flight is supposed to be yearround, and not just seasonal like AA's, right?

It looks like it's running through at least the end of April. But those schedules are far from done so if it does well they'll probably extend it.

I doubt DL would run a seasonal, once weekly domestic route. Aside from the local demand, a cruise contract would certainly help the flight out.

Of course they would. They run plenty of once weekly, seasonal routes to vacation destinations, although most are international. This flight is using a CR9 that is otherwise parked on Saturdays during reduced weekend flying. As of now, this flight is seasonal.

Can a CR9 handle the mountains of baggage that cruise passengers inherently bring?

Eh, could see if you were talking about US... as the new version of that carrier seems to have forgotten about this market from its NE and SW outposts. Pity too, seeing as it was said here (take it for what it is) by several individuals that MSY was long (old) US' most profitable non-hub non-focus station.

Well they def. need to throw in at least 1x A319/737 to PHX. I don't think they'll add LAS since WN now flies it twice daily.

US MSY ops will look something like this in January...not too bad, at least no CRJ's.

CLT: 5 (1x E75, 2x 319, 2x 734)
PHL: 3 (2x 319, 1x 733)
DCA: 3 (1x 319, 1x E70, 1x E75)

Sure DL and their BOS-CUN service makes sense for example, but MSY is not a high tourist destination for people from New England, not like CUN or AUA is for example.

Perhaps, but that could be augmented by the (alleged) tie-in with NOLA's cruise industry, as an alternative duplicate to what departs Florida.

Why?

There's certainly a market between the two cities. If not enough for a daily CR9, perhaps sufficient for a CRJ at yield.

Cruise contracts eventually expire.

The market is there for a daily MSY-BOS flight, at least seasonally, but it's best handled by a mainline jet, IMO. The yield isn't going to be there, and CRJs don't do well on long, low-yielding routes. It's a good MD80 route.

New Orleans is not like MIA or FLL with cruise ships leaving every day. The cruise passengers would travel on the cruise days . Also cruise contracts are on the bottom of the yield barrel.

Well, the timing of both flights could indicate a potential hook up with a cruise line of some sort, but looking at the cruise schedule, neither flight would be great for meeting a weekly cruise departure.

NCL's Norwegian Spirit departs every Sunday through mid April @ 5:30pm, and returns to N.O @ 8:00am the following Sunday. Not bad on the inbound for folks wanting to stay a night in N.O before the cruise (which a lot of people do), but the nonstop return some six days later would not be practical.

Carnival sails only 4/5 day itineraries currently departing on alternating Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. So the DL and FL flights would meet some of the Saturday cruises, but those Saturday cruises are certainly not weekly, since it alternates between all three days.

They ran a few cruises last year, and they said they will come back offering at least seasonal cruises when the Poland Ave cruise terminal opens in a couple of years.

Carnival is supposed to be bringing in another ship to do 7-day year-round cruises sometime in 08/09.

The port director said he thinks they'll be back in a couple of years. They have some new ship deliveries so I guess we'll see.

Majestic America Line (formerly Delta Queen Steamboat Co.) still cruises out of here seven months out of the year, as does River Barge Excursion Lines for about six months out of the year.

This flight should do well and I bet will go daily and possible with larger a/c, if not an additional frequency. At US we were begging for nonstop to BOS and always got the old excuse that no aircraft were available to run this route. We have/had tons of BOS traffic. Seems that DL has the sense to do in MSY what US would not do. US just digging a larger hole in MSY for themselves, LGA & PHX not reinstated yet and do not seem none too interested either.

Well I think it's kinda different since station manager's usually don't have any inside info as to what route planning decides to do. At every airline I've been with the SM's knew very little about the chances of new flights. All they could do was let corporate know that the demand is there for new flights. But they had little to do with the process.

The director of the Port of New Orleans has a lot more pull. He talks and negotiates with the cruise lines directly. I think in this case Royal Caribbean may be back in a few years once air service and tourism continues to improve. Carnival recently said they have seen a pretty big increase in fly in guests for its cruises out of New Orleans over the past six months. I think in three years you'll see Carnival have two ships here year-round (as they did before Katrina), NCL with at least seasonal service as they have now, and either Royal Caribbean or Princess.

Remember, that stupid hurricane really damaged more than the infrastructure. It damaged the mind set of potential visitors, and that obviously included fly in cruise passengers. One year ago, why would anyone fly and cruise out of New Orleans? Now, with the city coming back strongly in the tourism sector, I see the cruise industry here gaining most of what it had before the storm over the next few years.

In my experience, the sales manager in a city would let corporate know about demand for new flights, not the station manager. At all airlines the station manager runs the airport and the sales manager does the marketing, selling, forecasting, corporate contracts etc. Unfortunatlely, if flights do not do well, the sales manager is the one responsible.
They are independent of each other.

Well I was just basing my previous post on my experiences with Vanguard, Frontier, and Air Tran in New Orleans. All of those carriers had relatively small operations in the city so the station manager did most of the route promoting, if you will.

As an example, at F9, the then station manager and I made up a presentation and gave it to corporate in regards to demand for New Orleans-Cancun and Los Angeles service. We thought there was an excellent chance of F9 starting those routes from the city.

You are probably right about the smaller carriers. I was basing my statement on carriers like AA,DL,UA,US,HP,WN,NW,AC and the foreign carriers in the US.
