Swiss Planning Return To Pakistan

Thu Nov 08, 2007 8:10 pm

According to a poster at another board LX are looking to start service to Islamabad from 2008, no other details.

Swiss quit Pakistan in winter 2005 they were operating four times weekly to Karachi via Dubai with A332, for a year or more they also used A340 on two of the services.

LX just needs more widebodies. Heard that entries into Oman by Swiss citizens have increased by 63% compared to the year before. So an option could be

4/w ZRH - DXB - MCT
3/w ZRH - DXB - Islamabad
3/w ZRH - MCT - Islamabad

providing daily (almost) flights to all three destinations and only requiring the capacity of half an A332

A good time for any airline to go into Pakistan to grab the business due to the lack of the PK's own leadership. Good to know about Swiss going back there. More choices for travellers.

It is not more than a rumor. Honestly I regard the chances as quite low.

It might happen.. over the past months PK has suspended service to the following cities in Europe:

Amsterdam
Athens
Frankfurt
Moscow
Rome

**Zurich was terminated in 1997
**Geneva was terminated in the 1970s

Keep in mind though, when PK pulled its FRA service, LH started up FRA/KHI/LHE/FRA.

I can see LX and maybe others coming back after some time... lets just wait and see.

So do I. There certainly are more attractive destinations for LX than Pakistan.

= I am confused with the logic here. How does only 1/2 a A332 serve this route? I would think they would need a dedicated one for this purpose no?

= I have to agree. Have you opened any news paper of late for the situation in Pakistan? Newsweek considers it the most dangerous place in the world ... not Iraq. Having said that, LX could create a total niche market into Pakistan and pretty much have the market to themselves. OS did it with Iraq. Now here is my question ... OS and UAL to KWI both get tons of premium demand. Is there the same for LX to Pakistan? Or would this route be primarily VFR in which case I do not think LX would venture.

Cheers,
A.

I think he meant that they need 1/2 A330 in addition to the dedicated aircraft that is currently flying the daily ZRH-DXB-MCT.

yes it would be the same for LX if they flew to ISB as they will get a lot of F & J class traffic from the EU/USA/Canada embassy staff + other forms of corporate traffic since many intl firms operating in PAK have their HQ in ISB.

look at EKs & BA's J class loads on ISB...both are vvv high

BA stands to lose out the most if LX flies into ISB mainly due to LX's ZRH hub location which is in central europe thus not requiring EU bound embassy staff to back track from LHR to their home country  Wink

= Makes very good sense ... though, I was under the impression that embassy/ngo/dev crowd also flies a lot via the Near East? Perhaps those carriers wont like LX entry as well then.

However no further expansion seems to be planned as the widebody fleet is not planned to get increases further besides the current expansion. One indicator is also the order of only 9 and not more A333's or could there be possible options involved that could make this order be increased?

Thye never used MD-11 if they did it must have been a one off service in place of the regular A330 or A340.

They did in fact use the MD11 before the A330s joined the fleet.

They didn't under the SWISS brand, but they did as SR, which is the same. I'm 120% sure.

Different name, different IATA code means a different airline, even though there may be everything Swissair about it.

Interesting, back in 1998 I saw an SR A310 at KHI maybe MD-11 were being used in addition to the Airbus, Swissair were very particular about promoting new developments through advertisements and even billboards, they advertised A310 via AUH and DXB in early 90s and the A332 introduction and frequency increase when that aircraft came in, but never ever announced MD-11 service on the route.

In 1990 flew with SR DC10 to KHI on the way to PEK and in the late 90's again but I can not remember which a/c but if I am right it was a direct flight.

Not denying it, but find it strange that they never promoted the service, considering it was big upgrade from the A310.
