Will FL Ever Cosider RDU-DTW/ RDU-MSP

Fri Nov 09, 2007 6:48 am

I was checking and comparing some of the fares between FL, NW and WN out of RDU. Only NW flies nonstop to its hub bases from RDU. NW ofcourse flies nonstop. FL connects thru ATL and WN connects to DTW via BNA or MDW. It will be a lot of serious revenue for FL to start service between RDU and NW cities. Will they ever do that?????

Are you sure it would be profitable revenue?

They can try, But don't think NWA is going to welcome them with open arms. NWA is willing to buy airlines to keep them out of a non-hub city. Just think what they are going to do to keep them form the hubs.

No. AirTran was in RDU for a decade(?) before even adding a MCO flight. When will RDU get another AirTran flight? Maybe 2010. to where? If anywhere.. FLL or BWI. I would not expect anything much from AirTran anytime soon.

I doubt it. NW probably dominates those routes to the NW hubs.

Personally, the only other expansion in foreseen future for FL out of RDU would be either BWI or possibly MKE in the next year. MKE-RDU could possibly do well for those RDU'ers seeking to go to northern Chicago. Also, with the pharmaceutical industry in the triangle and the corporate headquarters in the northern burbs of Chicagoland - it may, may I say, hold some promise.

I think FL will grow in CLT before RDU. Just a personal opinion.

NW already price matches US & FL's fares on DTW-RDU, which are connections through CLT & ATL. The NW nonstops are generally $270 roundtrip after taxes. There is minimal room for fare improvement - thus not the "serious revenue" that you are implying may exist.

NW handles a significant amount of international connecting traffic over DTW, particularly to Asia.

Additionally, FL is not doing very well in DTW. They are doing very well out of FNT but DTW has not been the stellar performer that they initially intended. While DTW was able to pull in what was left of their following in TOL, it also canabalized some of their FNT traffic - but FNT has been able to recover from that.

Jan-April, FL does a good job of filling their flights, but that is not much of challenge to fill a plane from DTW to anywhere in warm destination that time of the year. The other 8-9 months out of the year are not as good for FL.

They are well behind the recognition of NW, NK, and WN in this town. FL very much as that "leisure airline to Florida" image at DTW. NW is now able to directly compete with its lower cost structure, NK is the home-town LCC favorite with a substancial marketing push in the Detroit area, and even now WN markets Florida destinations via MDW. People prefer the nonstop choices on NW & NK. FL announced DTW-BWI, and WN quickly followed behind. DTW-BWI by FL ran for less than 2 months before they retracted in the face of WN.

FL DTW-RDU is not going to happen.

There's no question. FL avoids stepping on WN's toes like the plague. There are no WN toes to step on at CLT.

That's also why BWI-RDU will not happen in the near future.

Very nice analysis. What do you think of FL maybe shifting more compacity to FNT and slowly shutting down DTW, especially if they aren't doing well? If you wanted to still capture TOL, they could reenter with 3 x ATL and 1 Florida?

FL does very well in FNT and maybe closing DTW and upping FNT would be a good idea?

Just thinking outloud.

No, I don't think anything significant is going to happen. FL is just going to maintain status-quo in DTW. Don't look for any sort of expansion, and FNT isn't the answer either. They are remaining status-quo there too. American Eagle currently is FNT's favorite child.

Since FL has so many new planes coming online, more than opportunies, they will stay in DTW. DTW can't be overlooked simply because of the huge O&D potential. However, it has not materialized into a gold-mine like they initially thought. FL entered DTW during NW's darkest days in late 2005. They announced service during the lead-up to the mechanic's strike that never really occured, and right around when NW went Ch. 11. At the least, DTW is a better option than TOL but it isn't some underserved/neglected market. It is more or less a sign of FL's severe identity crisis.

The poor local economy does nothing to help either - its a no-growth market.

There's no chance, NW sends mainline equipment from MSP and DTW and even on most flights from MEM to RDU

Nah.. Northwest sends CRJs to MEM.. mainline was available for a few months this summer, but that's not normal...

MEM-RDU is a likely CR9 route when they make it down to MEM, though.

The CRJ-200 FC class program has apparently been suspended. They did conduct a study to gather passenger feedback and determine feasiblity, but for now it isn't happening.

That said, it is possible that MEM-RDU could see the CR9 someday once they are deployed out of MEM. Over the summer you did get 1 daily DC-9 on MEM-RDU with the others being CRJ's

I can't see that working to well. NW would flip on FL and slash fares/cut capacity.

WN markets Florida destinations via MDW.

There is also two non-stops to MCO from DTW on WN now as well.
