Question About GIG/SDU-CGH Ticket

Thu Nov 15, 2007 3:51 am

Sorry to have to ask about this,
The question might be very simple, but I have never been to Brazil before and know not much about the airport there and happen to have to buy a ticket from Rio to SP when I am now in the US.
1) Is it ok if I wait until I am there and buy from a travel agent? I am only in Rio 4 days before the schedule to go to SP.
2) If I'd better buy it online, the ticket GIG-CGH is R189 but SDU-CGH is R289 (depart in the afternoon). My question is I am a tourist and stay in Ipanema beach, SDU is closer and has nice view, but is it worth to go to SDU instead of GIG but pay more on the ticket??
The infor on this will be appreciated

1. If you have a forein credit card you cannot buy tickets online with TAM. GOL accepts foreign issued AmEx. If you buy your ticket from a travel agent you will most certainly get the same fare as on the website, except for promotional fares which are only available online;

2. If you are in Ipanema, SDU is closer to you (about 30 R$ taxi fare). GIG, by contrast, will cost you about double that amount. SDU is smaller which means procedures are faster than GIG.

I think VARIG has no restrictions for foreign credit cards. I suggest that you try buying it online with yours. The only problem maybe your address, since only European and South American countries are listed. You can try putting Unites States as if it were the city and New York as if it were the district (bairro). If the American credit card doesn't work, then you will have to try it another way, but I would definitely fly VARIG.
The taxi fare will cost you circa R$ 25 to SDU and between R$ 45 and R$ 50 to GIG. Don't tip the driver.
It's absolutely worth it to pay more at SDU, because you are somehow independent from the rest of the domestic network. There are constant flights to CGH and you will have the pleasure to experience SDU.

Personally, I wouldn't bother buying it until you turn up at SDU. There's so much capacity with Varig, TAM and GOL that you can just turn up, buy a $40 ticket and go and avoid being constrained by a ticket for a predetermined time. Nice new terminal as well.

If money it's not a problem, go for SDU. If you want to save some money, GIG is a good solution and there's a lot of flights, but i sugest you fly with TAM from Terminal 2.

You can take a Special Bus from Ipanema to GIG, it costs less than R$ 10,00 and takes about 1:20 on rush hours.

About buying the ticket, as Hardi mentioned you can use an Amex card or you can buy on TIcket Counters at time of arrival in Brazil (TAM accepts reservations). If you are looking for a high season month (like January and Feb) be in mind prices are even higher seven days before the flight.

If you need more info, you can also contact me by message as i use to fly NYC-RIO every month.

Correct, Lipe.

During high season you may have to book the flight well in advance. Yesterday I was trying to book TAM GIG-GRU on 12 January and for some flights only FULL Y are available...so booking ahead may be a wise decision.

I would face the same problem, but i will be visiting São Paulo during 2 days and get back to Rio in order to fly non-stop to ATL and connect to LGA.

I will be in Rio probably at the same time, the first two weeks of January for vacation and runaway from snow !
