AA At EWR

Thu Nov 15, 2007 8:45 pm

I could swear this has been discussed before, but searching didn't easily yield any info. So...

Could someone list AA's current offerings from EWR?

Thank you.

AA has already listed them out for you - just go to www.aa.com and search for the PDF timetable. Voila - that was easy.

LAX-2 flts a day (752)
DFW-6 flts a day (MD80)
ORD-6 flts a day (MD80
SJU-1 flt a day (752)
MIA-2 flts a day (752)
STL-4 flts a day (ERD)
RDU-4 flts a day (ER3)

This is a drastic scale back from a few years ago when they had a daily LHR-EWR 763, and daily A300's on SJU-EWR and MIA-EWR, and i believe at one point also had BOS-EWR

Thanks to all. I didn't realize AA.com had the timetable mentioned by RwSEA.

What about the ski flight?

I do remember seeing lots of 727's flying out of EWR during the 90's. American pulled them out of JFK and LGA in the mid 90's (1995/1996) but continued to fly them out of EWR for the reminder of the decade. It wasn't until the early 2000's (the end of the 727 at AA as with all other US majors) that AA pulled them out of EWR.
I also remember the 767-200 in service on the EWR-LHR route (flight AA 92) in the late 90's. I took that flight twice. Yes you are right, the A300 used to fly out of EWR to MIA and LHR. Like Cubsrule and Usairways85 show on the schedules (thank you both for the info, it's nice to know), the A300 no longer flies out of EWR not even to MIA. So my understanding is it is only at JFK and MIA that the AA A300's are still seen. I'm not sure about BOS.

It seems to me that American is concentrating its NYC operations on JFK and LGA, and abandoning EWR. I understand that because EWR is a main hub of Continental, that must be the reason why the DOT is giving fewer slots to AA at EWR. I would call JFK/LGA combined a hub for American. Even before 9-11 American had fewer flights to DFW , MIA and ORD out of EWR than they always had out of LGA, and much fewer flights to LAX and destinations in Europe than they always had out of JFK. Conclusion: AA service to EWR is limited compared to what it is to JFK and LGA.

That route was only recently dropped. It was an Eagle route on the -135.

AA use to run at least 3 a day Newark to San Juan. Anyone know why they are down to just 1 ?

My guess would be competition from CO on EWR-SJU. Basically, as is the case at any fortress hub, besides offering basic service to their hubs, other airlines don't even try to compete with the "hometown" airline -- they always have the strongest FF base, and it's simply not worth the effort to try and capture the few pax that aren't already loyal to the local hub carrier.

BOS-EWR

They did, ER3, I had to do it once connecting from the SQ SIN>EWR flight. Surprised to see that go. At one point even DL connection was flying that route, so you had 3 airlines on that...now, just down to CO

But AA also fliesIAD/PHL/BDL-SJU on 1x 752. I think AA has just cut down frequencies to SJU over the past year or two. They used to have multiple flights to all these airports daily. I miss seeing the AA EWR-LAX 763s that were seen earlier this decade. AA used to also fly 763s during the summer of 2004 from EWR-SJU. I guess this was when the A300s were pulling out of EWR.

Is EWR slot regulated? I know LGA is and JFK at certain times of the day.

No -- there aren't any slots at EWR, and there are the taxiway lines for takeoff to prove it...  frown

I use AA at EWR whenever I can. Its the best AA service as the security lines flow nicely, AA somehow always seems get in front of line during those long taxi's. Never had a problem there with AA. Wasn't AA the first airline to fly there? It was also where then (NYC) Mayor LaGuardia said "I demand to land in NY" and that was the birth of LaGuardia? It was LaGuardia who didn't agree with flying to New York on AA and landing on NJ soil! Hence he lobbied for LGA...and that began commerical aviation in NYC-truly NYC

The last flight was a 1530 departure on EWR-SJU. I remember because NYC Crews would not cover it and it was flown by DFW Crews towards the end. I also remember traveling on CO's 72S on SJU-EWR in a really bad summer storm in 1996.

Long live the 727! Great bird.

All their SJU-Mainland routes have seen cuts over the years, even MIA (used to be 9x, now 7x) and JFK (used to be 8x now 5x). AA has less planes than they used to, and a good amount mainland-SJU flights were cut as a result. ORD, DFW, MCO, FLL, and TPA each lost a frequency as well.

DFW is 7x during certain days of the week and MIA is 3x daily almost all the time. There are a few random days in the schedules where its only 2x daily but aa.com shows 3x daily. These depart routinely depart early morning, midday, and late-Afternoon.

In 1995 I remember flying a 722 from SJU-EWR on AA. Great flight indeed!

That schedule that USairways85 posted is a reduced fall schedule. AA reduces the schedule heavily between Labour Day the week before Thanksgiving as planes go into heavy maintenance checks.

Odd that you say that, as the schedule I posted in Reply 1 was straight off of the Oneworld timetable for Thursday... are there routes that get MORE frequency normally?

Your schedule was the correct schedule. USAirways85 was the reduced fall schedule. The "normal" schedule rolls into effect between 31Oct07 and 15Nov07.

That makes sense... thanks. I guess given that the Thanksgiving travel 'rush' began on 16 November this year, they should have been back to 'normal' by the 15th.
