Airline Catering Now Compared To Then

Sat Nov 17, 2007 3:51 am

When I started flying in the seventies, the choices really were beef, chicken and fish. Occasionally you would see the odd special meal. Now there is a bewildering array of meals. Low sodium, wheat, halal, veg, vegan, kosher, no nuts, etc etc etc. I wonder where it's going to end up? How many choices are there now? Luckily this is an information age so maybe we will be able to order specific meals for each flight. I feel sorry for the FAs though. As for me, I am allergic to nothing, have no religious issues so eat just about anything from any airline anyplace.

Thoughts?

If you go back far enough, e.g. to the PanAm clipper flying boats in the late 1930s or the German Zeppelins, you would get restaurant style meals with freshly baked bread in a restaurant style enviroment.

Overall I would also have to say that IMHO the overall quality on TATL Y food has vastly improved from what it was in the 1990's.

In reality, at least on U.S. domestic flights, it is more like nothing now. When I first noticed the title of this topic, my first thought with regard to "catering now" is what catering? (within the context of U.S. domestic flights) While meals and/or snacks are in some instances served in F on U.S. domestic flights, such are, at best, roughly equal to what was offered in Y during the 1970s-80s.
