CO 733's

Sat Nov 17, 2007 3:54 pm

Will CO be scraping the 733's anytime soon? I will be flying on one from FLL-CLE on Feb. 21 and I'd like to know if it will have video. Do they still have the 'FlightLink' ?

CO is adding winglets to about 37 of the 737-300s, so no they are not totally leaving the fleet anytime soon. As for inflight entertainment some have the monitors above the aisle, I flew LAX-SFO on one of CO's 737-300s with the monitors over the aisles. For the short hop up the coast they played only music videos, Spice Girls etc.. This was November '97.

I also recently flew in August Myrtle Beach-EWR on a CO 737-300 in First, no monitors but the aircraft was in excellent condition.

There are like 12 (?) 733s that have overhead video, but they usually fly longer flights. The others don't.
Enjoy the flight, CO is a fine domestic product.

Cal is selling 5 of the 737-300s. We are keeping them for at least 3 more years bad news is there getting rid of the video system the on the few (12 i think) we have. The 300 is now our new junk jet. It used to be the md-80 and before that the 727.

Minor correction.. only 11 733's have Winglets. It's the 735s that will have the 37 (possibly more) so equipped examples.
Of that number, the eighth (Ship 648) has just entered the operating room for the surgery.

An even minor, minor correction.. It's a mix of 738/739s. No more 73G's are planned. Any of that type Boeing may show for CO will become 8s or 9s by the time they get to the factory floor.

pretty unlikely you'll have video, but anything could happen. if by "flightlink" you mean the link that shows your flight plan, airspeed, map, etc- no. this is only on the 75, 76, and 77 now. having fun watching "Circle in the Big Blue Sky"  Wink

I would imagine as more and more longer range 737NG come into the fleet, the 737-300 would stop doing any longer segments. You might (just conjecture) see them cease to operate at all to the west coast. 735s would still do so of course, as they are smaller.

True that. I try to avoid the CO 733s as much as possible. They're like the UA 733/735, you just want to try to avoid them because the Y seats are so worn. I think some of the CO 735s have the newer 'winged headrest' type seats.

A few years back US removed the video systems on a handful of they're 734/733 because of weight reduction issues. For something that is so useful, I really think the whole de-installation is a dumb idea. Especially since removing them costs money to begin with. Of course back in the 1990s both airlines used the 733s on transcon flights which needed video.

It's been a few years since I've last been on a CO 733, but I flew them both ways IAH-YYC (4 hours in flight) and it's a fine aircraft for the route. For your short CLE flight, I doubt the aircraft will have video, especially since the monitors are being removed (on a lot of examples, you can see the patchwork where the monitor used to hang)-- that said, I don't think specific -300s with video are rotated based on stage length for the flight, but I could be very wrong. My 733s in both ways DID have video. I really don't find the -300 any better or worse than the -500 or even NGs for short 2 hour flights like yours...

Rumor going around is that CO looking the convert some 733 to cargo. Use them to shuttle bags and cargo to Central/South America that are always being cut from flts due weight restrictions. They are always sending the stuff on cargo carrieirs via MIA at a major cost.

You can keep those 60+ year pilots to fly them.

Ships 320-329 have the overhead video on the 733's. The 735's don't have anything at all. And the seats on CO's 733's are in way better shape than those of UA/US.

I fly BOS-IAH a few times each month. I almost always try and book the 73Gs but sometimes I get stuck on a 733 or 735. Almost always, the 733s flying that route have the overhead monitors with movies and Continental Vision. It seems for awhile that the route was close to being all 73Gs with a few random 738s thrown in there. Now, it's almost back to 100% 733s and 735s. Ugh. The flights I have been on are almost always packed.

IIRC, that's not correct. The age 60 limitation (which may change) in Part 121 applies to cargo flights also.

Sec. 121.383

Airman: Limitations on use of services.

The shortest flight that I've flown with the TV monitors was IAH-IND, which is shorter than FLL-CLE, so your flight isn't too short. It's always hard to tell though. There are a lot of variables in aircraft route planning. It is possible. You should bring your own headphones just in case so you don't have to buy them on board.

CO has 48 733s, so the odds are about 1 in 4 on a route like yours.

Quoting Ryanrap1 (Reply 7):

CO has more 737NGs on order, so we'll see more come into the fleet over time.

I had a CO 737-300 in August 2006 flying IAH-PHL (3+ hours in the air) which did have the overhead video. I have heard many times that the TV monitors are being taken out, though hopefully that's not happening.

I flew CLE-LGA in October on a 737-300. No overhead videos but the plane looked new. The senior flight attendant told me the interior had been replaced again and new carpeting, paneling, and seat fabrics installed.

Some of CO's 737-300s are 20+ years old.

Hey,

As far as I know all the monitors from the 733's have been removed. Last I knew there were 10 that had em and they were being removed...this was about 4-5 months ago so Id suspect theyre gone by now. On my longer flights I try to get 73NG's vs the 753/733/735's. (I actually prefer XR's over the 73 classics at Cal). Im headin to RSW in 3 weeks on a -900 and an XR (E-145XR) instead of the return on a 733.

Have fun on the CLE-FLL!!! At least Cal stills gives food and mealtimes, blankets, and pillows....as they say on their billboards, "How cutting edge"

IIRC, that IFE system is so old parts are no longer readily available. So the number of craft with functional systems is diminishing over time.
