Bite The Pillow And Take Your......

Sun Nov 18, 2007 6:46 am

Time for another
Big version: Width: 134 Height: 128 File size: 24kb
rant! I'm up to category 4 on my  mad  scale of pissed off!

If this has been covered forgive me; I’m not good with A-Net forum searches. Uncle Sam is making a big deal with their dog and pony show regarding helping the flying public with air travel. So, they’re opening up special express lanes along the East Coast. Fine and dandy but, while our government giveth they taketh at the same time. Since Oct. 1 of this year, the TSA has made the background checks of new airport hires a Broadway production. It used to be, a person could start their airline, airport job while the TSA conducts their background checks but now, new hires have to wait and wait!. We are feeling the adverse affects. New airline, support staff like skycaps and vendors all are getting royally screwed. Because this, we all are shorter staffed and this is causing glitches at the airport. We have to wait longer for our new hires to start and here we are coming into the badass holiday travel season! What’s wrong with this picture? For example, our skycap company literally has their balls tied. New hires are not able to get their badges and therefore can’t assist with the increasing number of handicapped passengers that fly this time of year. Our current sky caps are being worked like coolies and having to wheel two wheelchairs at once. Wait times for disabled passengers are doubled! And of course these passengers are screaming and cussing us all out. I’m linking two articles about this. Some paper pushing drone is giving the spin and excuses that their new system has bugs. Then for Christ’s sake either get it right the first time or, rescind the new requirements until you get your act together. Sadly the traveling public gets the royal shaft along with us the airlines.
So, for those of you that want to flame me, go ahead turkey taste great well done. We are all the turkeys for putting up with this tom foolery!

So the TSA finally corrects a flawed policy, and it's a bad thing?

Allowing people to work before the background check sort of defeats the purpose of the background check. It's stupidity to the extreme.

But I feel your pain about how long you have to wait to get results. This is why I laugh when I hear people push for government run healthcare in the USA. Surest way to increase costs, increase delays, and decrease quality...  Wink

Oops, Sorry the moment you've been waiting for:

The other article is basically the same from a Seattle paper. This USA Today piece covers it.

At least with the airlines FL during our training at company headquarters, at the beginning of our two week training class we:

  • Took pee/drug test
  • Complete application reviewed, all references and ten year job history
  • Fingerprinted---sent to FBI I believe
  • Complete criminal background check.

And this was March 2002! Some class members got a one way flight home because, something wasn't kosher in their background checks, drug tests. And for those of us hired, TSA followed up with complete background check. By that time most if not all the bad apples were weeded out. And, knock on wood I can't recall any major security breach/events caused by an airport, airport support or airline employee. BTW, not going off course many in our government including Bush want open borders and the creation of the North American Union One world government new world order is your flight's final destination!

True, the additional security measure is a good idea and I do give some credit for it's starting during our slower travel peiod October. But here we are flying into the Holiday Season busy travel and Uncle Sam again put the cart before the mule.

That's the way it was for me in STL in 2002. Earlier this year at DFW I got my fingerprint results and was badged within 3 days. Just a few months ago we hired 2 new guys with ramp access and had to wait OVER A MONTH for badges, as did other companies here. New security measures are fine, but delays this long are detrimental to everyone and I agree with the original post. Yet another mis-handled situation by the government regarding security.
I didn't get a 'Harumph' outta that guy!

Ya... that sneaky travel season...it keeps changing. Can never prepare for it until it gets here.  Yeah sure

I have an idea... hire early, dont wait till November 1st to start looking for people. The new TSA procedure has been around for at least a month and a half maybe 2. Was it really a shock that it takes TSA 72 hrs + to do this?

Uhhh, last year when i started I had to wait for TSA to clear me. It took almost a week. This is nothing new.

here it takes about 6 weeks for the background check, but in meantime the new hires are given temporary passes, which allows them to work while being supervised by an escort with a permanent badge. So I just team an old hand with a new hire during this period and they can at least help a bit while their background check is being processed.

The stupid thing in Germany is that we have a law since about two years which centralises all the application process (a federal central databank, into which all the background check results get stored, which is accessible for all airport companies and state police departments), but the the individual states still insist on their own background check. E.g. I work in HHN, which is operated by the same airport company as FRA. To get a badge for FRA, where I'm occasionally sent, I had to undergo a new background check, because the state of Hessen, where FRA is sited, won't accept the background check done by the authorities of Rheinland-Pfalz, where HHN is located. It is all a matter of money, since the employer has to pay for each and every background check.

You think TSA is bad, try getting a U.S Customs sticker to handle bags/planes that originate out of the US or are going out of the US. Here in MKE it can take over 2 months to get a sticker for new hires.
Good Luck to all Skyway Pilots! It's been great working with you!

Whether Democrat or Republican our government has grown to the point where many facets of their operating policies and practices are costly and counter productive toward common sense, safety and decency. BTW, I think opening those express lanes is an excellent start and should contribute toward a smoother Thanksgiving holiday period.

Since I started with my company I have gone through 5 background checks, i'm sure they covered all the same items, so why can't the government use 1 standardized background check. It would only save them millions each year.

I'm convinced it's a safety net for built in job security for these agencie's employees.

Here in the UK, (at a BAA airport) you get a temporary escorted ID, if you work in the airside retail (and hence don't require ramp/jetty access). You will always get a thorough body and bag search with a temporary ID.

If you work for an airline, for example, as a CSA, you get a company ID, which allows land-side access only. You do not get airside access until your security checks are completed and verified. Seems to make sense to me, anything else would defeat the point of the criminal record check and security verification.

I applaud the TSA for finally taking employee airside-access security checks seriously.

I thought it amusing too. 'Drug', to 'drag' something isn't a correct usage of the word. 'Dragged' would have been more appropriate.

It's everywhere as well. It takes 6 weeks just to renew the all access red zone security pass here. It takes longer when you're starting. I actually thought I hadn't been accepted by NZ because it took them so long to get my initial security cleared, and therefore to offer me the position....I applied late January, and finally started on the 15th May for my training...

I have nothing in my history that would lead them to suspect anything, so I have to wonder how long it takes when they do want to query something further.....
