DL Running ATL-GSP On 738 1x Per Week

Mon Nov 19, 2007 9:27 pm

I was just searching for a flight on Delta.com and came across a 737-800 flying the ATL-GSP run and back. After further search on the flight schedules page, it seems that DL is running a 738 once a week into GSP (Friday), along with the usual mix of MD-88s, CR9s, and CRJs!

My question is: Why is Delta flying the 738 into GSP in the first place (it's a 30 min flight), and why is it only once a week?

edit: the 738 only seems to be running Dec 7 and Dec 14 - I don't see any further 738 flights scheduled, so apparently it's only a two-time thing.  Sad
Why did DL do this?

Yes, that would be the obvious reason.  Wink

But why did DL schedule the 738 only to run two times, and only once a week?

Amazing what airlines will do for you the closer you are to their hubs.

It's not so much that they need to capacity as that they need more capacity than a CRJ or a CR7 or whatever the next smallest available choice would be. There's probably not a Mad Dog around to make the trip at the necessary time on those days, and on such short segments, a lot of excess capacity isn't such a big deal (anyone remember the NW DC-10 that RONed in MKE 3-4 years ago?)

GSP has a lot of European demand. Strictly a guess, could be to accomodate loads for that day of the week.

A peek on the connection list of the GSP-ATL portion will probably show a very high number of pax continuing (especially) to Germany ...

Doesn't US/LH have the BMW contract?

Ah, now that you've mentioned it I'm almost certain that's what it is. Yes, BMW is huge here, and chances are, BMW has called some sort of meeting.

Thanks guys!  Smile

LH does, but as far as company exec transport, BMW probably goes with whatever carrier will be able to accommodate the pax better. At GSP, it's always gonna be DL. DL runs mainline regularly, whereas US only runs regional, and Delta's just got a much bigger operation at GSP. Always has, always will.

I'm sure DL was very cooperative with BMW's travel agents.  Wink

Why is Delta flying the 738 into GSP in the first place (it's a 30 min flight),

As recently as Delta's June 1, 2002 timetable (among the last of the paper timetables issued by DL?) they offered 9 daily flights ATL-GSP: 4 opb CRJ; 4 opb M80; 1 opb 738. It isn't so much about the length of the flight as it is capacity needs relative to yields and costs that determines equipment types and frequencies in a given market plus, of course, equipment availability. Since 2002 Delta has retired a substantial fleet of 727s and 737-200s which have not nearly been replaced on a one-for-one basis with mainline type aircraft.
