Questions For Cabin Crew - Mainly VS/BA

Tue Nov 20, 2007 1:44 pm

Hi

Just have a question or two regarding interviews for cabin crew. I have an interview coming up for a large uk airline (not sure if i'm allowed to mention names here or not so I wont). Anyway, I already had an interview for this same airline earlier this year, got to the final interview and then lost my nerve completely and knew I had made a mess of the whole thing!! Anway, hopefully I wont do that again - I have wanted to do this for ages so any other crew members got any tips on how to get through - what to say, not to say etc!!!
I also have a question about appearance. I had another interview for another (overseas) carrier earlier this year and they were very strict on appearance - before my final interview they told me to flatten my hair. I don't have crazy hair or anything but I do wear it quite messy/spiky so I was wondering what I should do in this case - would a uk airline be strict on this?

Sorry if these seem daft questions but any tips would help beacause I really want this job.

Thanks

You trying to join an airline or a band?

Save the "individual statements" until after you have the job. I speak as an employer here.
Breakfast in BHX, lunch in FAO, dinner in TIP, baggage in YYC.

Why would you want to show up for an interview with any company, wearing messy/spikey hair. If you were running BA/VS would you want your employees to give that image? How about the pilots?

Follow the advise on what others have said about the hair. Also listen carefully before you speak and answer the question directly, do not talk aimlessly and look into the eye when you answer, smile and be pleasant to everyone you meet, as you never know.

Hi, as a guy who has to have short hair, I'd say they will 'prefer' you to have flat, short(ish) hair. Don't got for a skin head type hair cut but nothing too long and ideally shouldn't cover the ears. The UK airlines will be as strict on personal appearance since they're the face of the airline, so they won't allow things like face piercings, visable tattoos etc.

Not cabin crew, but from interview experiance, I'd say be well turned out, wear a standard suit and tie (no wearing your all orange suit etc hehe), have well polished black shoes, short smart hair cut etc.
Look the interviewers straight in the eye when being asked and answering questions, if there's more than one of them, remember to look occasionaly to the other(s) even if they aren't the ones you're talking to. Be polite, listen to the questions, think them through (so don't just to conclusions and answer the question you THINK they asked, you may laugh but you'd be surprised how often this can happen). Go in prepared ! think what they WANT to hear when they ask the question, if they ask what type of person you are, you don't want to come across as a non-team player or someone who has a problem authority or when they ask what your veiws are, they don't want to hear you're a member of the neo-nazi party and want the downfall of society etc !.
Make sure you're happy working with everyone and don't have prejudeces etc, never a good thing to have and try not to hold grudge.

All in all, try and relax, get up early on the morning, have a good breakfast, take time and pride in your appearance, go in prepared and showing you really want the job, and go for it !

Good luck and even if you aren't succesful, it just means you're better prepared for next time  Smile

Not trying to join a band. True, I should not have mentioned this  Smile

Otherwise thanks for the tips - I will make sure I do further research and be well prepared on the day.

Have you ever seen the Virgin boys?! They say at VS that your hair is your hat and it goes for the boys too. VS seem to encourage crew to have trendy cuts/ styles. I'm not saying get a red mohican but VS don't expect you to be too conservative.

At my BA interview I went with my hair spiked up (as I, and most men my age in the UK usually wear it) and I got the job. I'd say its still fairly smart though. Have never been pulled up for it by a CSD/ Purser either. Looking back though I wouldn't risk it again just incase I was lucky on the day with who I was interviewed by. Just don't go over the top and don't put too much product in and I think you'll be ok.

Good luck!

This is an absolutely true statement. After passing a telephone and initial interview, I was sent to the airport to be interviewed by my potential supervisor. Because I was worried about traffic, parking, looking rushed, etc, I arrived about an hour early for my interview. This was no problem for me because I love airports, and I figured I could loose myself in the crowd until my scheduled appointment. While walking around, I passed someone, and we caught each others eye. I smiled, and she smiled back. I went on to get a cup of coffee. About 40 minutes later I arrived relaxed and ready for my interview. Who should great me? The woman who I exchanged smiles with!! The first thing she said was "didn't we pass each other in the lobby?". I am sure my initial interaction helped. I was offered the position shortly thereafter.
Opinions are like @ssholes. Everyone has one, and everyone thinks everyone elses stinks!
