Chavez And Cubana IL-96

Tue Nov 20, 2007 6:29 pm

There are pictures online that show Venezuelan dictator Hugo Chavez flying to the OPEC summit in Saudi Arabia, Iran and France on a Cubana de Aviacion IL-96-300.

Does anyone know why he is using Cubana de Aviacion and not his own? Also, is this the IL-96 that is in VIP configuraton for use by Fidel Castro?

I'd guess much as with Iran Air flying to CCS it's a show of solidarity.

Venezuelan dictator Hugo Chavez

ouch.....

Its probably a sign of solidarity, but you never know with him. He is so desperate for attention, who knows why.

It's simple, the A319CJ is in France for heavy maintenace, but I guess conspiracy theories and paranoia are more atractive.  Yeah sure

Well, there are other a/c available, rather than resorting to Cuba.

Perhaps it is "normal" for a Swedish oficial to "borrrow" a Russian plane when ONE Swedish a/c happens to be in maintenance. It does not seem normal here.

Isn't Chavez all cozy with Cuba? IIRC isn't Venezuela Cuba's newest trading partner particulalrly with petrochemicals?

Let's hope that this doesn't get dumped as a "political" post.

It's been said that the Crew and technicians quited. Thus, no pilots or technicians for the A319CJ. Officially, the Presidential Plane is in maintenance. I wonder why he did not use the 737-200...  sarcastic

Well... the 737-200 is currently used by the Venezuelan Government for VIP transport. The transport of passengers to and from Cuba is being made by Conviasa, Venezolana and Air Europa, which leased a 767-300 for such task.

Yes you´re right they´re using the Air Europa, Conviasa and the Venezolana 737 and parked in ramp 4, some Saturdays you can see the 4 planes (Including the cubana IL-96) Parked there!!!

Hi!

Just to let you know that he passed I think yesterday in LIS, and it was indeed a Cubana IL96 CU-T1250 that flew him here. He stayed just a few hours!

Yeah, the A319 is in manteinance right now... but I wonder as well why wouldn't he use the 737 or the 707 he has parked at CCS...

Who knows... the dude wants the most comfort possible...remember, hopefully he'll be out soon!

Cheers

This is really a shameful situation. In fact Chavez made a joke about this topic...he said that he is praying for not getting shot when the Cubana's plane overfly the Moncloa's palace in Spain...he is such an idiot!.

And the Conviasa's A340?? he could also use it!

I think this is more of an issue of the IL-96 being the only available aircraft at the time that was large enough to take-off, fly and land with this guy's ego on board.

t's been said that the Crew and technicians quited.

That is the correct story.

Chavez was going to use the Conviasa A340 for his European and Middle East trip but the whole civilian crew (cockpit and cabin no less) quit their jobs at the eleventh hour. The only alternative for Chavez was to ask his buddy in Cuba to lend him one of the planes Venezuela has financed Cubana with.

Very little in terms of information has leaked out on the walkout by Conviasa personnel but, by any measure, it points to the extraordinary disarray at the airline and their inability to finally get off the ground because of the political meddling and ideological obedience demanded of its staff.

This has been one of the most embarrassing moments for Mr. Chavez... to have to fly on a borrowed plane because his own pilots refused to take him !! What a difference to the old days of the former VIASA which had flown Venezuelan Presidents without a glitch.

As to the Venezuelan Air Force 707, it is a tanker and Chavez has disdained it in the past after a few incidents (including the bursting of tyres on landing at Bahrein in 1999 which led to the Sultan of that country lending him his 747 to fly back to Venezuela in true petrodollar style...). Indeed, that is the reason the A319 was ordered in 2001.

Greetings from Cancun !

By the way, one of the Venezolana 737s was or is still being used by Cubana, not sure why.

Thanks for the info Civilav!

Imagine: Brother Fidel, can I borrow your IL-96?

-sure Hugo, you have to get there in style to represent the Revolution!
