Spotting At ZRH And FCO

Wed Nov 21, 2007 12:39 am

I will be travelling to Rome, Italy with the Riverside Community College Marching Band this New year. I will be leaving LAX on the 26th of December and departing FCO on the 2nd of January. I will be travelling on LX 41 LAX-ZRH then LX 1732 ZRH-FCO. The return leg is LX 1735 FCO-ZRH lastly with LX 40 ZRH-LAX. I've been outside of the country last year when I went with my high school band to Paris last year through LHR so I've already learned a few lessons, but what should I know about those flights and spotting at ZRH and FCO. My time will probably be limited to in terminal viewing only, but I want to see as much as I can. Any suggestions for when I am in Rome? Thanks everyone for you help!

In ZRH you will have to go onto the viewing terrace. The exit is at the check-in hall 2. When you have time take there also a bus tour. Learn more here:

Both Rome and Zurich provide excellent airside views. In Zurich you will arrive/leave from/to LAX in E concourse and from/to Rome in A concourse. In both concourses, you have excellent views of all movements on the departures level after security. The same applies to Rome for the major part of all airside departure areas. There also is a restaurant upstairs from check-in that provides decent views.

Thanks to you both! Hopefully I will be able to have some time to check out that spotting spot. How is the duty free in ZRH? I take it that it is good.

There are many shops in the Airside Center. I think in comparison to many other airports it is good.

Hi!

ZRH is always an excelent place to spot. You have also a nice cafeteria were you can have a drink and a light meal and you have the Aviation Shop with very good books, magazines and other aviation stuff! This is like ZRH said in Hall 2. The duty free in ZRH airport is also very nice and complete...and with excelent prices too!
The only think I miss is that there's not a lot of movement in the Terminal B like it used to be some years ago! I remember being there and seeing THAI MD11's, VASP MD11's too, Emirates. But still is a great place to be.

Hi Mark,

if you are looking for a FCO spotting guide... nothing can beat this one! (it's in Italian but there are a lot of pictures and maps clearly understandable).

Have a good spotting session in FCO!

Thanks again everyone. One more question. Since my usual spot is here in the US I dont see much in the way of Russian aircraft. What are my chances of seeing say a TU-154 or something.

Unfortunately in ZRH not too good. As I recall there is no scheduled TU-154 or 134 flight. Sometimes you have a chance to see an AN 124 here.

Rather slim at ZRH. There's the occasional Rossiya or Pulkovo TU154 around here, say once a month, but they're charters and impossible to predict.

That's because Terminal B is currently closed  Wink In the mornings, you can get up close to TG's A346, MH's 772, SQ's 77W and some Swiss A343s, as they're always parked around Terminal B during idle time.
