Wed Nov 21, 2007 7:18 pm

from http://www.flightglobal.com/articles...a320-p2f-conversion-programme.html

"Airbus expects to finalise the first firm contract for its A320 passenger to freighter (P2F) modification in December, ahead of a formal programme launch in January."

I'm wondering which airline will be the launch customer? DHL would be my guess to replace their mixed fleet of DC-9s, 727s and older 757s.

I admit that when I think of freighters, I'm thinking wide-bodies. This project looks like a sure winner to me. Are there any estimates of the total market?

Aren't the 727s and 757s considerably large than the A321?

Edit: found the link to answer my question!

Interesting to note how it compares with the B752SF & B752PCF.

This may be a dumb question, but what are the best areas of the world for, and routes for A320 range air freight operations? And also , would those routes be more economically served by bigger freighters? Just asking.

Interesting. The A320 conversions make a lot of sense. I'm a bit curious about the A321 conversions, though. The A321 was optimized for high passenger capacity and its payload/volume ratio is not that high. It seems at first glance like an A321F would work only for package carriers. Perhaps that is the intended market...

I notice the data charts don't say anything about payload! (Or OEW, with which we could calculate payload by subtracting OEW from MZFW.) Zeke, do you have payload numbers for these two frames?

I think the 23t A-320CF and 28t A-321CF would work very well in the 800nm-1200nm range missions, which fits into the US market for most over night FedEx and UPS destinations. That frees up the B-757F/PF for missions beyond 1500nm.

The only competitors I see to the A-320F/A-321F program is the B-737-300F/-400F conversions.

The B-757F carries more weight, and cubes, and has more range. It will be used on different missions, and is not a direct competitor to the A-321F.

Some months ago i opened a thread about A320F.

At that time Air&Cosmos wrote Airbus HAS ALREADY the first customer for the A320F.It is a LARGE order , but Airbus didn't reveal the name.So this name will probably known in December.

Referring to Air&Cosmos , quite many airlines are lined up to get A320Fs.
