I really doubt that the entire wingtip fell from the 737. If so was the case, they wouldn't land safe.
It has to be a 732, right???

From the description, I'd go with a flap. A slat isn't nearly that wide and a wing panel can't come off without completely losing structural integrity of the wing.

Without any other data to go on, it sounds like a broken flap spindle or track to me.

The story kept changing over here...

Many interesting things going on at Batavia, its 732 chief a month or two ago resigned or sacked when the airline found out he was giving simulator access to an unauthorized person (who is rumoured to be wanted by security in other airlines).

The allegations of crew roster "irregularities" were rife... with some claiming they "had to" fly 150hrs a month on a regular basis.

And Batavia is currently suing ATR and EADS to get their deposits back on purchasing ATRs... which they said "upon seeing the aircraft for ourselves, didn't live up to what it said in the brochure."... This, and the airline still expects Airbus to deliver more planes to them...

And just 2 days ago, the airline complained about photos on the internet of the cockpit of one if its A319s. Citing "the aircraft owner isn't happy that these photos were on the net and contained confidential information." *LOL*... is the aircraft registration and its sel-cal code confidential?

Actually, most of the carriers (low cost and full service) operates 733/4/5... Batavia still has a small number of -200, Mandala is down to 1 - 2 -200s, Adam is down to about 2 - 3 -200s (or is in the process of). Only Sriwijaya has a large fleet of -200s... 15 of them or so, and 1 733.
