AEA - Association Of European Airlines?

Sat Nov 24, 2007 6:34 pm

Well I have been surfing the European Commissions Web Site and found some information about an association called AEA - Association of European Airlines - well there is also a website: www.aea.be

Well I have some questions about AEA:

1) Well I wonder what is REALLY the purpose of AEA, it appears to me to be nothing more than a lobbying group. Is this true?
2) Another question: Why are the low cost carriers (like Ryanair, or EasyJet) not members of this association?

Well if anyone has some information (links, documents) about AEA please let me know.

The AEA goes back to the early 1950s and is a trade body very much like IATA that represents European airlines and has taken part in many industry initiatives in recent years including European ATC harmonization, security and safety, eticketing and baggage initiatives etc.

In Europe the AEA has set the standards for deicing. All deicing operators are trained to AEA standards and their operations are inspected to AEA guidelines. Airlines now accept that if a deicing operator is to AEA standards then it is OK.
Before this happened all airlines had to inspect and approve their own deicing operations. It has saved a lot of duplicated effort. Each year each operator is inspected by one airline, and the results are distributed through the AEA to all airlines. It has led to standard procedures, and a lot less work for the airlines.
