TG A340-600 To LAX Via KIX, What A Mess!

Sun Nov 25, 2007 10:28 am

Hi Guys,

It came to my attention that from the 1st week of Jan onwards, it shows TG using A346 a/c on the LAX runs via KIX on Tue and Thur. Therefore reducing the direct nonstops by the A345, However, when you try to book an F seat on the A346 its not possible, even my travel agents tried to check it up and they said F is not bookable!!

Don't tell me that TG has planned to put the A346 on the route and then now its thinking of pulling it out again?

Hope someone can shed some light on this!

It is extremely possible, and quite likely, that they are not selling a first-class product on the route, and simply letting the eight First seats they have go to full-fare business passengers. It's a way to save costs and be consistent across the line, since the non-stop LAX-BKK 345 flights have no F service.

Is this in addition to the nonstop, or replacing it?

And, by the way - the BKK-KIX-LAX flight is a direct flight, BKK-LAX is nonstop; while a nonstop is technically also direct, a direct flight must not necessarily be nonstop.
Smile - it confuses people!

Maybe, because on such a long haul I really want to be in F, but no one knows what is going on, especially TG staff! IF its really sold as a 2 class, how can I get into the F seats? I am currently booked in J but on Econ price with my GOld ROP upgrades!

not guilty! ...I am always waiting for them to put a F product on the LAX route !

Yes it's sold as 2-class. Call and ask for a seat in rows 1 or 2. Big grin

then you probably won't be near the top of their upgrade list to get to the front seats if you are actually paying Y price

Doesn't the A345 offer 4 Classes of service including F?

My assumption would be that the seats will be given away to Thai Gold members and something higher given there is somethign like this in their frequent flyer program. Swiss is using an A340 on their TLV flights which has 3 Classes however F is not offered on those flights. The 8 F seats are given away for Senator and Hon Circle members and the seats are usually first available when check in opens or even first at the Gate on a first come first serve basis.

Nope, it's only 3 classes. Business, premium eco, and eco on the A345.

Thai has always had low yields on the LAX flights. For years when they operated 747 via Japan they sold F as J & J as full Y. I thought with the A340-500 flights nonstop to both JFK and LAX they would attract a higher yield mix.

This an airline that shouldn't fly to the USA given the western location of Thailand in Asia as B angkok is more a tourist destination then a financial one. Hong Kong and Singapore are the heavy financial centers in SE Asia, bringning an bankers premuim in air fares.

I think to the USA BA also sell some routes as Y, Y+, and J. Even though the plane has F seats, they are only used in J sell out AND they need to move people up. In those cases, the F cabin is catered as a J cabin -- only the seats are F. Could be that TG is doing something similar.

If you want F, I'd go on the non stop.

Just my thinking.

Thai's booking engine leaves something to be desired. When their A345's just came on the scene it was "next to impossible" to book Premium Economy.

well, I can tell you that when I was on these flights this past summer, they subbed an A346 on the LAX-BKK portion of my trip. I had a business class ticket and my friend had a prem economy ticket.

They bumped him to business since there is no prem econ on the A346.

They then bumped the frequent fliers from J into the F cabin. maybe that will be the case here?

Was checking the schedule on Sabre for TG's BKK LAX route.

I took random dates in Feb. '08. I did not see the "new" flight X/KIX. All I found was a daily non-stop (TG794) alternating 345 TUE-THU-SAT (no F class seats) 346 MON-WED-FRI-SUN (F class seats on rows 1-2). Interestengly, although TG publishes a "F" class fare, the "F" inventory code availability does not appear when retrieving TG794 when operating 346. So, if I "sell" "C" space and "view" the seat map, I see rows 1-2. However, the eight seat in 1-2-1 config are all blocked! NIce perk for the crew, when TG does not UPG their best customers!

Best,

Guido

TG has 4 A345’s to do daily flights to both LAX and JFK. From 8 Jan – 21 Feb, one of the aircraft will be in maintenance.

With the flight time to/from JFK about 17h, the 346 couldn’t make it non-stop even one way. However, LAX is only about 14h40m outbound which allows the A346 to go non-stop to LAX and via KIX as a tech stop on the return flight LAX-BKK.

This was also done by TG last year for maintenance. This has nothing to do with any type of service to KIX.

SQ has also done a tech stop from LAX-SIN when one of their 345’s was in maintenance.

Does anyone have the timings for these flights? I'm scheduled to fly LAX-BKK-LAX in the middle of January. I'm wondering if my flights are affected and what the flight times will be if there is a stop in KIX.

Thanks,
Naveen

Hi there, as mentioned by Bkkair, this is probably due for maintenance reasons, thats why you get to see the A346 for the periods of Jan -Feb. Outbound will not require a stop in KIX, but on LAX-BKK, a tech stop of around 45 mins will be done in KIX. If you want to get on the A346, the operating days are Tue and Thu

No. 7441 sold as F/C/Y as on any other route apart from ARN/CPH.

That is correct, this was way back when even the retrofits weren't done yet. I was quite often on those flights to LAX via KIX and had to purchase outright F tickets. Those F were even worse than the ones on the ARN/CPH routes, with no PTV whatsoever!

And during this period of time some ZRH and MUC flights will run with 744s hopefully the upgraded ones in F and C. Thats where TG are getting the 346 from to run the LAX flights.

Atleast SQ have 5 345's but yes they did have 2 out of service at one stage and ran 772ER's with a tech stop at TPE on a few flights.

I don't know who is running TG but they should pick up another 345.

What about this lone 346 that has yet to be delivered to TG? Does anyone know when its delivery is scheduled?

(To get back on topic): I also find it strange that TG has ordered only 4 345s and not 5 like SQ. Given the prestige of these ULH routes, you defintely need to have a spare aircraft always at hand.

Slightly off topic,
Wasn't there discussion of SQ pulling the 345s out of service and using a 77L or 77W on the SIN-LAX-SIN trip? We all know SQ hasn't been the happiest with the 345s.

Back on topic, how's TG doing on their ULH's now? I hope things have improved as several months ago they were thinking of dropping both BKIK-LAX & JFK trips because of the high costs and low yields.

If it was both ways, I would assume that it would be bookable as TG has traffic rights, but since it is a one way tech stop, no.
