Question About Love Field

Mon Nov 26, 2007 12:38 am

In 1968 about 120 of us members of the 101st airborne division were on the way to Vietnam via ATL and had to change planes in Dallas to get to SEA and pick up a C141 out of McChord AFB... We had no Idea where Vietnam was in reference to the "World" and while walking around the lobby of Love field someone saw the marble floor outline of the entire world, and we at last could see where we were headed from where we were standing ! This was a real moment of discovery for most of us... I'll never forget it. QUESTION.... does that Muriel still exist (doubtful) and are there any pix of it anyplace on the net? Thanks (for the record vets... A/Co 1st/501st Infantry, 101st Abn 68-69)

Looks like it's still there. That's a great story you got there..unbelievable how you all were ready to fight even though none of you knew where in the world you were being deployed to geographically!

Yes, that mural is still there. That terminal was built in 1958 and it's still the main terminal for Love Field today. I was last at Love Field in 2006 and enjoyed walking around on that mural and looking places up. It's a fine example of terrazzo airport-flooring art. A more recent example is the floors in the concessions atrium at DCA.

For a great discussion of the history of that terminal, see the Old Terminals website:

Here are some pictures of the lobby, probably taken shortly after it opened, showing the mural:

Indeed it is.

Its right in the area of security check in, past the AA/CO check in, and just besides beyond the WN Check in counters.

Pretty sweet story you got there, and I will certainly think of it when I fly thru DAL and see it!

Wow, great story!
Thanks for serving my country... even if I wasn't alive at that time.

Anyhow, yeah, Love Field is my favorite airport, and the globe is still there.
They've recently redone the flooring in the baggage claim and rental car area, and I was afraid that they'd redo the lobby floor as well (you can't exactly say that the inlay is up-to-date; the borders have changed countless times, the iron curtain has fallen, and many of the countries on it no longer exist) but it's still very cool.

But yeah, as of May 2007 it was intact.

The rest of the lobby is a let down, though- the observation deck has been gone for about 20 years, and the restaurants are long gone, too.
