It's because Americans are very upset about the A380 dethroning the 747 as the biggest airliner and are intentionally snubbing it every chance they get.  Wink

Did it come in at 2pm today as scheduled? I was looking for it online and in the sky. My work is under the path and I was outside from about 1:30p to 2:20p and never saw it come in.

this was not the case yesterday in MSP, there must have been a few hundred people along Post Road which is one of the viewing areas. There must have been the same number at the Humphrey terminal and on the gold parking ramp when it was taking off for the demo flight at 10.00am in the morning. I do not know how many were there when it landed 2 hours later but that was at lunch time so there may have been more.
Maybe the next time it comes to MSP will be in NWA colors to transport all the DC9 pilots back from the desert there will not be so much interest.
Did you notice how quiet it was on take off?
Love to fly

Saw it landing on a CO flight today, then drove over to it in my car. It is very accessible, and everyone should go look. Just take Imperial Highway west, you can't miss it.

There's a Kalitta 747 parked nearby for reference. A380 doesn't seem much bigger, but is more massive due to the full upper deck. Second time seeing it here at LAX in reference to a 747. Very nice looking plane from many angles, the 380, but headon, still a bit awkward due tot he placement of the cockpit.

It's parked nearly nose to nose with a DC-3. If anyone could capture that image, it would be fantastic!

Can anyone get a pick with the A380 and the DC-3 in the same shot? Preferably nose to nose angle? If I could, I would, but I can't get in the gate. It would be one of those classic shots, and one I don't think exists currently in the world (where else has the A380 been parked next to a DC-3?)

With the overkill in media coverage on TV and in print during the past couple years it really isn't news anymore.

Once we start getting A380s with actual airline liveries then I'll make the effort to get up to LAX to shoot them...until then it's old news.

Did the A380 leave today? I was going under the airport on Sepulveda and saw a few helicopters hovering over the airport at around 7:30am....

There is a demo flight scheduled today, LAX-LAX roundtrip. It leaves for SYD tomorrow morning, IIRC.

On a radio report that I heard, L.A. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa is not allowed to take a 90 minute flight on the big jet due to law that was put into place in the train era.The law still has a lot a merit and prevents abuse. Read the link. But I laugh my head off when I heard it.

It is just as valuable now as opposed to then. After all, why is it any different when Boeing or Airbus offer a free flight? Considering the modifications that are required for the A380, and may be required for the 748I, and the cost involved, the free demo flights given to politicians around the world are basically done to "curry favor" and it's exactly why the law was enacted.

And considering how our mayor and city council operates, I'm glad they was allowed to go. They are corrupt enough as it is.

We are long past the stage where Airbus has to twist the arm of local politicians around the world. Demand will be the drive.

The A380 is coming to LAX; fact

What more favour do Airbus have to curry?

Or is the intimation that not only do Airbus have to pay the airlines to operate their aircraft, but also the airports and poiliticians too...?  sarcastic   eyebrow

Why was the A380 back at LAX? I missed it by two days. Its nice to see the interior around this time. I remember when it came to SFO there were newspaper photos of the interior but no seats.

No intimation. Clearly stated. But not as payment, as perks and "schmoozing." And not just Airbus, but EVERYONE. The law was enacted a LONG TIME AGO because EVERYONE tries to curry favor with politicians. Due to the high costs of transportation infrastructure and the importance of government involvement via rights of way, land redistribution, state grants, etc., it's vital that undo influence is kept in check.

Let me put it another way: why does Airbus even invite the Mayor and City Council on a free flight? They don't make airline purchasing decisions, and if it's entirely as you say that airlines will drive demand and airports will respond, then what's the point of flying our corrupt mayor and our corrupt city council around? Because they are friends?

Of course you know the answer, but you are being defensive.

Living here and finding out about scandal after scandal involving our elected politicians accepting free hotels, airfare and other perks, I'm more sensitive to this sort of thing.

But I'm with you. Let the airlines push the demand for improvements. Right now, LAX is barely ready, but yet they are ready right on time. But only for a limited number of A380s at one time. If demand increases, LAX will adapt. But the politicians shouldn't be influenced by "how great the flight was and how cool the plane is inside" or anything else like that.

And BTW, the 748 requires some rejiggering of gates at LAX, and may have to fight with the A380 for the few larger LAX gates. So if Boeing were to come down and try to get our "distinguished" politicians on their plane to help convince them it is a "good idea" I would be against it.

Let the airlines lobby the airport. Let's not have the airframe makers lobbying the politicians. It's not their place...

It was the background for the channel 7 morning news. I was shocked to come out of the shower and my wife start telling me about 'the airbus'. How big 'the airbus' is... I think they received some good press coverage this time. It seems that the non-aviation world is going to associate this plane with 'Airbus.'  Wink

LAX needs to get new terminals!  hissyfit  sigh... not happening. But I can hope. Sadly, the A380 production rate won't be high enough to justify a large increase in A380 gates for a couple of years.  cry  But if this city is to grow economically, we need to grow LAX.

What's gonna happen (already greenlighted) is midfield concourse built in two phases. The 1st phase will be a 5 or 6 gate wing (north-south orientation) right smack where the old TWA (now American) hangar is located - near where all the Qantas 744s sit all day. This is because the primary gigantic AA hangar on the south complex has a few more ticks on it's lease...once that is up (about 18 months), construction will begin adjoining the nearly completed Phase one structure--thereby extending the new midfield concourse the full length of (and parallel to) TBIT and just west of it. It will be connected to TBIT by underground moving sidewalks. And it will be, in effect, an extension of TBIT...for International Arrivals! Exactly where stress relief is needed most. Without question, this will be A380 / 748i gate-ready.

As for materialization of the far western Terminal complex (where the remote gates are)... no clear ruling on that (and hopefully it will not happen).

A bit bigger - 8-10 gates in the initial Northwing all capable of handling the A380.

The airport commission earlier in November put a solicitation for bids on the new facility which is expected to be operational prior to Jan 2012.
