LAX - 10 'Heavy' Action 1989-90 A/c Video

Thu Nov 29, 2007 2:18 am

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=8105852748729857453&hl=en

Here is another.......shamless ....and I mean SHAMELESS plug.

This is old VHS video I took at the old Imperial parking lot - and then the FedEx lot - in either 1989 or 1990 - I did not put a date on the tape. But enjoy the DC-10 heavy action - I threw in a few other aircraft to make it interesting - excuse the bad tape quality - I had a POC JC Penney 8:1 zoom camera,,,,that was all I could afford back then.....these are a few run-bys from a 2hr tape I took back then over a 3 day period - I think I was down there for the LAX Airline Collectible show......that year.

enjoy

Thanks SO much!  Smile Great footage that is rather historical and is definitely much appreciated. I especially like the sound of the DC-10's when they takeoff, what a nice groan those CF6-50's let out at takeoff power!  bigthumbsup

Thanks 747Fan -

I sure wish I had better camera equipment back then - plus ambient noise levels drown the video out too..
plus all of the crazy ramp rigs going back/forth....

I'll look for more on that tape to post later - this tape took 4hrs to upload with high speed DSL...so it may be awhile for the next one.

Thanks YVRLTN

The BA dash 30 was a surprise to me - but of course, they had to take the early high speed and not roll down to where I was....I had the 35mm slung around my neck - deciding what camera to use was always a tough choice...video or print..hmmmmm....the Florida West 707 couldn't roll any farther either - just my luck...but at least I moved down to FedEx before it took off...the upload here doesn't do the tape justice - the TV view is actually quite clear - the video quality loss on the upload is big - even with HQ settings, and a 4hr upload - it still looks bad.....but thank you

Talk about DC-10's galore, particularly AA. The ex Air Cal AA 732 also stood out. Great to see all those DL Tristars too. Wish I could go back in time. Great video.

TrijetsRmissed:

yes..the AA732 was sitting there quite awhile actually - probably waiting for a gate - I could post 732's for 5 hours but would be boring....I have video from YVR to LAX over the last 20yrs stuffed w/-200's, maybe I'll post a vid of those - mixed with my fav - the coolest jet ever, the 727.......??....that might take some time tho'.....but yes, the Tri-jets at LAX were plentiful back then...

Thanks to all for all of the comments - mucho apprreciado..

I always said the best time in aviation was between '85-'95. When the Concorde was flying, along side the classic 747s and the 744, as well as the A300 and L1011...

Very Beautiful. Love those classic DC-10s and 707s.

United should paint some retro liveries on their planes now; the brighter color is more exciting.
I love those black nosed Deltas.... what ever else they do with their livery they should keep the dark nose on their jets, it just make the plane look so much faster and sleek.

Thanks for posting that

Beautiful! I did some spotting in the late 80s at YHZ and hearing the 727s and DC9 on your video brought back some great memories. I've only seen one DC8 up close and that was an AC DC8-70F; the pax one was great to see in action. Thanks for sharing this!

wow nice to re-live typical early 90s action. That Florida West 707 is both eye candy and ear candy  cloudnine

Anyone has any MIA or MCO videos from the 90s or earlier and knows any website I could get one?

Again - thank you to all of you who have left comments - this was a full 2hr tape - so I may add some from this video - I'll have to watch it and maybe pare it down to several 3-5min segments - as it's much easier to upload smaller clips - this one took over 4hrs with High Speed DSL - there may be more 747's on the next segment - but I'll run through it first and see what it has - I haven't watched this video in a quite awhile...

*sigh*... Could you move that back to begin with '80, please? The VC10s were still around at the start of the 1980s, and as you might see from my username, I have a lot of affection for the handiwork of Mssrs. Vickers.

Also, don't forget that for most of '80-'95, there were still quite a few 707s and DC8s in service.

Amen! Completely agree with you. This goes for other carriers as well, as far as I'm concerned.

Fabulous to see, thank you. Not only classic types but classic liveries--UA (missed, but not too much) and DL (Widget Livery still the best).

Also, take a look at his TW -1011 launch from SFO footage. That fabulous sound of the -22Bs spooling up. Something (literally) almost never heard anymore.

Wow! That was magnificent! If anyone wants to get a sense of the LAX traffic in 89, check out departedflights' OAG listing: http://www.departedflights.com/LAX89intro.html

I'd bet at least one of those DC10s or L1011s are winging off to SAN, SFO, or somewhere else equally close. That won't be happening again anytime soon!

It would be interesting to see the regional traffic if there was some video of that. Probably would mostly just be Metros or B1900s!

DC10s2HNL:

yes,,the regional traffic was cut out for more -10 'Heavy' footage - but there are several Metro's - Jetstreams - (and 1-Pan Am Express Dash 7) that weren't that great on the video - but you give me an idea to run a regional a/c segment - with skywest and eagle being the most prominent- and one AirLA clip.....

VC10DC10 -
yes - the VC10 was quite an a.c - I never saw an airliner - only one British Military at KJSC years ago - but print film only - didn't get it on video as far as I remember....

WDBRR - I have a SFO tape that has quite a few Eastern jets departing SFO - as soon as Airutopia.com is done working it - I may post some of that in the weeks ahead - stay tuned..

Thanks again for all of the Comments - very much appreciated..makes all of the hours standing by the runways years ago seem a bit more worth it..

I agree those DL jets look so elegant and sleek in the old livery, the L1011 was especially elegant. Far nicer than tthe pukeful deltaflot and new livery of theirs  cry

What I noticed was the lack of international airlines in the video (probably because it's cut). I also noticed how the LH 747 parked there is in old c/s!

Good point. I'd say the early/mid 90's were my favorite because we had the mix of the classics like the DC-10, 741, Tristar, A300 and all the narrowbodies along with the more modern 744, A330/340, MD-11, 777 and such. A great era for spotting and diverse fleets.

wow,,hard to decide what year was best - there are many favorite a/c - but being a BFI rat - I always am partial to the 727 as I lived in SEA growing up, and we lived on the hill east of BFI-straight across- and up the hill from the hangar by Swift Ave, and all I saw for months on end from our back porch, was #1 727 taking off and landing all day and night - test flight after test flight - what a treat - sure wish I could download video from my memory banks, and show you all what we saw........plus every other a/c that transitioned thru BFI in the early 60's.....B-47's thru F-86's -Tall tail -52's-- F-100's and Globemasters to a one time thrill of a B-58 Hustler......man what a ride that must have been in that jet...

I got a couple questions about the planes in the tape.

Please forgive my youngun'-ness and the fact that I didn't realize commercial aircraft were cool until later in life. (If it wasn't military, it was stupid. Yes, I was a naive kid.)

2:45 to 3:00 - Is that a DC-8?

11:45 to 12:00 - What airline?
B1B - best looking aircraft ever.

The one taking of is Aeromexico but if you mean far away in the distance that's a DC-8 of Trans Continental.

Did BA fly LAX-LGW then? I thought all the D10s were LGW based?

Exaauadl:

I really don't know - I'm sure some of the other forum members have the answer - but the few times I had been at LAX in the past when I saw this BA DC-10 - it was the only time I saw it - normally it was a 742 back then - but I wasn't always in LAX back then.......I'm sure others will reply..

Miamix707

Correct on both - thanks for answering

For a while the LGW-LAX DC-10s continued to SAN which was BA's initial routing to SAN.

In the late 90's the routing to SAN went through PHX.
