KE - Business Class Questions

Fri Nov 30, 2007 4:46 am

Will be flying KE in business (prestige) class BNE-ICN-FRA return in December. I know the A330 operating between BNE-ICN still have the old style business class seats. Does any one know if all 744 in the KE fleet operating in to FRA have been upgraded and feature the prestige plus seats ? On the way to FRA you have a 1 night layover in ICN. Does anyone know which hotel KE uses for the overnight business class passengers ?

Really excited about this 5 day trip as it will be my first international flight in 13 months traveling without our infant son so I'll enjoy every minute reading and Korean hospitality on board. Thanks in advance for all your replies.

Cheers from Brisbane,

Peter

I had done the stopover well over a year ago traveling PVG-ICN-ORD. At that time they used the Hyatt Regency which was at the airport. A nice, top shelf property to spend an overnight at.

Insofar as the seats go, I do not know if there is info on line, but the printed timetable has a notation indicating which routes have the enhanced business class product. I would guess that means that there is a very high chance that you are going to get the product if it is noted in the timetable. If it isn't noted, there is still a possibility based upon equipment rotation. A very nice offering, the seat is angled flat, similar to MH, OZ's product and the service is very good. Enjoy.

I can confirm that they will accommodate you at the Hyatt Regency Incheon and provide you with some meal vouchers. The hotel property is owned by Korean Air's parent company I believe.

Their service in the premium classes are not bad, I've personally enjoyed them on a number of long-haul trips in the past few years. I have heard that their Y service is mediocre to poor, depending on flight but you wouldn't have to worry about this. Enjoy your flights!

Y service is not at all mediocrea and poor. It is devinitely above average. One feature they have, what other airlines don't is the onboard library.

I have recently flown LHR-ICN on KE and I can say that KE definitely have the best Y service of any airline that I've been on, including Cathay, British Airways and THAI. The legroom is very generous, the AVOD system has plenty of films, music and games, the Korean beer is top notch, but best of all is the food. Never in economy class will you have a meal as good as KE's 비빔밥 (hope I've spelt that right).

If only KE's safety record was as good. I know they haven't had a fatal accident since 1999 (luckily...except for the crew...a freighter) and have passed the IATA Operational Safety Audit, but I believe they are the only carrier to have written off 5 747s in accidents (plus 10 other jets since 1976), including 2 off-course aircraft (747 and 707) shot down after straying into Russian airspace.

ICN-BNE will be, as you mentioned, the old style business class on the A330-300. All things going to plan, ICN-SYD should have the new cabins from Jan 1st 2008.

ICN-FRA have the new business cabin on the B744.

I'm sure the service will be great and you will most definitely enjoy the night at the Hyatt. If you happen to bump into any of the KE foreign captains at the Hyatt (that's the layover hotel), ask them to point you in the direction of BJ's bar, as it's a great place to get a drink and some food if you feel that way inclined - even owned by a former KE captain!

Since this post was regarding business class questions, the comments alluding to safety deserve no reply. You will have a great flight, enjoy it!

Cheers

Really? I don't think so. KE will no more upgrade 747, nor SYD is profitable high-yield route. I'll check if there's other possibility, but I doubt. Currently FCO, YYZ, and SYD are the only old 747's longhaul routes. Soon KE will start 772's upgrading work, or it may have started already - I can see that one of old 772s is out of schedule for a few days. (It maybe C check or something, though, let me have some hope.)

Exellent suggestion. Will certainly remember to look BJ's bar upon arrival. Thanks to all responses. This will be my third trip on KE's all in business and I am looking forward to trying the new business class seats between ICN and FRA.

I'll second that - they absolutely blew my expectations out of the water back in September. Best Y experience I've had in a couple of years, easy.

Some malcontent brings this up in every KE thread. Not only have they passed the operational audit, but they've also completed a top-to-bottom overhaul of their recurrent procedures training and CRM, including a massive effort to recruit western crew members. The KE of today is nowhere near the same operation you saw ten years ago, so any comparison as such is irrelevant.

Just wanted to give my 2 cents on KE's Prestige class, which I tried for the first time on a round trip between JFK and PVG via ICN a couple of weeks ago. I was very, very impressed. The design of the new seats was fantastic, the food was as good as any I've had on a plane (be sure to get the bibimbap), and the AVOD system was top-notch. Service was excellent throughout, and ICN is a spectacular airport that is very well designed for connections, with a great Prestige lounge. What more can I say--KE will be my first choice for my next business trip to China. Hope you enjoy your flights as much as I did!

Actually, my trip to PVG happened to be my first trip since the birth of my daughter 4 months ago, so I know what you mean--of course I was sad to leave her, but the IFE allowed me to catch up on some of the movies I've missed in theaters since she was born!

I recently flew the old Business Class on the A330 along with the new Prestige Class seats on the 777. I wrote a trip report with a couple of pictures, hopefully it helps you answer some questions.
