Mytravel And Thomas Cook

Mytravels aircraft are slowly going to be painted into TCX colours over the next 6 months, the first was G-FTDF A320 which is now in TCX colours.

Looks like the end for the nice mytravel colour scheme!!

Yes and makes for a more boring |UK charter schene. All this consolidation leaves the passenger with less choice of charter airlines than at any other time in UK package holiday/IT history. Sad.

I think it is better to have fewer choices, when those choices are better off financially, then a slew of different color schemes of airlines close to being bankrupt. Though that is just me.

Less choice is a bad thing. The big tour operators and their airlines have consolidated to such an extent that competition in the sector has virtually been eliminated. This is sad. A few years ago we had a proliferation of charter airlines offering maximum choice and keeping prices down for the consumer and ensuring that airlines had to compete and work hard on the quality of service provided.

They have been eliminated as they were not financially healthy to stay the course. Quality service is wonderful though when you have to give it away to attract business, then you most likely are not going to stay in business, hence now you have fewer choices though the ones you have are financially more healthy.

I recall that every time I have booked a charter holiday, the airline hasn't come into the equation. If I want to go to X hotel in Y resort, and would like these dates, then the airline would be selected for me by the tour operator. If more than one operator offered this hotel, then price would be the redeeming factor. No-one I know has ever chosen a package holiday based on the airline they get.

And while we have a reduced choice, there are still a fair few operators out there so competition will still exist.
No trees were harmed by this message. However, several million electrons were terribly inconvenienced

Name me one UK based charter airline in the past 7 years that has been eliminated for one for a better word in recent years that was actually worth choosing?

Except from maybe First Choice, long haul, they all offer the same very average service with abysmal leg room and over priced meals.

Get real, I could understand if this was the 1990s when generally service was good. This has not been the case for about 7 or so years, so less choice in the charter world I think is a good thing. The only bad thing is not for the consumers, it is for the airlines staff who will be layed off - that is the only bad point of less UK charter airlines.

The vast majority of passengers do not choose a charter airline. They choose a holiday and the flight just comes as part of that. You could stand at the arrivals hall in TFS/PMI/ZTH/LCA etc and ask the British charter pax who had just flown them there and I bet only 50% could actually tell you.

And as the others above have said, if it was financially viable there would be all the operators and airlines there was 5-10 years ago, but it simply isn't. The market has vastly changed, and it needed consolodation to survive. Granted there aren't as many package holiday firms to choose from these days, but when you look at the bigger picture, today more people can afford to fly to more destinations from more airports than ever before. That can only be a good thing.


Back to MYT, that lkooks very nice, I like the TCX scheme. And at least they painted the whole aircraft in one go. Remember back in summer 2003, when Airtours had become MyTravel, and MyTravelLite had launched. It was like they were going for the "most schemes for one operator" award. It seemed every aircraft had a different hybrid livery!

I miss Airtours. My first flight was on them, LGW - PUJ and back in 1997. I was only 6, but after then I knew I wanted to travel the world.

While there may be a lot less competition between the charter airlines they have to consolidate to survive in the face of competition from low cost airlines. The traditional package holiday is a bit 1980s. People can just as easily purchase a seat on an LCC and book a hotel/apartment/villa,etc. online now and cut out the middleman.
