I flew out of SYR on the 7pm flight to CLT. And there was already freezing drizzle on and off most of the day. Some parts of the ramp resembled an ice rink. So it isn't much of a shock that something skidded off the runway last night. Just glad I wasn't on it.

Wow! Just glad it wasn't any worse. Sounds like it was a long ordeal for everyone.... I'm just wondering why no one had the sense to check the gate area and ensure it was cleared of ice before the aircraft arrived. After all, once the A320 had slid off the runway, one would think they had plenty of time to clear the gate area.

What makes you think the gate area wasn't clear of ice?

In the video, the reported indicated that when the plane arrived at the ramp, they had to deice the mechanism in the gate because it was frozen. Added more time to the delay.

Got it. Didn't watch the video and the story didn't mention anything, which was why I was asking...Anyway, good question; why wouldn't they have ensured the gate area was deiced?

Good old "Siberyracuse"! One of the places I don't miss from October to April. BGM and ROC was bad enough.

If the plane was stuck on the runway did that mean they closed the runway? If they did, then wouldn't that cause a problem seeing as there is only one long runway at SYR?

Probably... but at 10pm on a Sunday night there isn't a ton of activity to begin with. And runway 15/33 would have been available as well.... its 7000' and has instrument approaches.

Gate areas are not deiced. Never have and with the expense involved never will. The ground crew whom ever they are should have taken the initiative to ensure the ground equipment needed is free of ice. I do not know what weather conditions were last night, but it is possible that the equipment needed was clear of ice and it had re-accumulated on the equipment.

I have been in this situation before, having an aircraft slide off an icy runway (737-400 in CLT). 2 hours to get the plane and passengers to the gate and deplaned is maybe a little long, but certainly not excessive. Especially being that SYR is an outstation for Jet Blue and it is late on Sunday night. Actually the more I think of it, not bad at all.

I'm not sure how we lucked out on this deal, but when we flew J41's in SYR for a barely 9 hour overnight for US Express, we'd drop off the pax at the terminal and got to park our ride in one of the hangars. Next morning, the hotel van driver would drive us to the FBO and the FBO would drive us to the hangar, where our J41 was outside of the hanger, deiced (seeing as how it was inside overnight, didn't need to be deiced) clean, and ready to go. We didn't get that service on our PIT flights for US Express or our ORD flights for UA Express for our EMB145's. Then again, the 41 fit in the hangar with the GA aircraft, and the EMB145 didn't. That and a turnaround rate for the 145's where they didn't RON. Now that I think about it, it kind of sucks not having a sure ride the next day waiting for me when we get to the airport.

Side note about SYR, outside of securtiy is a pretty good barber shop. Last time I got my haircut there (I was on a three hour lay over), the barber used a straight razor for the trim on my hair. Ahh, nothing like a good haircut and the smell of Barbosol around my ears and the nape of my neck. Drives my female pax crazy, not to mention my wife once I finally get home. I didn't always have time to go to my local barber in Petersburg, VA, so I had to get my hair cut somewhere.

Other than the Dinosaur Restaurant and the Carousel Mall, Siberycuse ain't all bad. Just the weather sucks most of the year.

Speaking of the "gate area" not being deiced, reminds me of a funny story out of TYS. I was working on the ramp for DALGS and it was a very slick night. The ramp had ice patches everywhere, we hadn't put any salt down for the Pax to walk up the stairs. This one guy with a briefcase walks down the CRJ steps and heads for the gate stairs, I manage to poke my head out of the back of the RJ and happen to see him eat it hard. The Briefcase goes flyin, pops open and papers go flyin everywhere. I fall back into the cargo hold, laughing my butt off. My friends that were outside that had to deal with it first hand said, he was cussing every word in the book. So a note to all the rampers out there, make sure the walkway is clear lol.

From what the report says, the passengers thought Jetblue handled the situation pretty well. Also some of us like snow like me (in fact there's a blizzard outside my window as I'm writing this). It's fun being able to throw a snowball especially when you're feeling angry. We here in Syracuse are used to the snow and love it plus living in the area alllows one to experience a good variety of weather. BTW SYR's other runway is long enough for jets (7500 feet) (http://flightaware.com/resources/airport/KSYR/APD/AIRPORT+DIAGRAM) and I've seen regular mainline jets taking off from it (like an AA MD80). Also the airport is one of 2 places that that I can find my favorite kind of yogurt (the other being at SU).

I live about 60 miles east of the Syracuse Airport. Due to the bad Weather last night at around 10:30 PM EST I tuned into the Live ATC.net to listen to what was going on at SYR. At approximately 10:45 PM EST Jet Blue Flight #660, an A320 reported after landing on runway 10 that the taxiway mike braking action was nil. Next they reported that they had skidded off the Taxiway a little and were stuck. The tug that was dispatched to pull them out was not able to pull them out as the ice was causing their wheels to spin. A sand truck was sent out to help. During this time Runway 10 was shut down, leaving runway 15 the shorter runway open. Nobody seemed to want and land on the shorter runway.
An inbound US Airways Flight #1110 decided to divert to Pittsburgh. After they got the A320 moved they reopened Runway 10 and planes started landing again. I did not hear anything about the frozen Jetway until it appeared on the news.

JetBlue Says Plane Did Not Skid Off Runway

Looks like the report was only from the passengers stand point, and the news didn't wait to confirm any information first.

That's funny, right there. If I were the F/A though, I'd get blamed. I've had some overnights in TYS. If you ain't from down the way, you don't realize, the South does get cold. Last time I went to visit family in my hometown of HSV, I was staying with my cousin in Paint Rock, AL and he didn't have central heating. It may have been 70 degrees during the day, but it got down to the 20's at night. I woke up the next morning on his couch and I could see my breath, and that's not from the moonshine the night before. Cool thing though, we could bow hunt deer from his second story window and it's legal.

Last time I ate the ground was in Charlie West and as I was trying to open up our J41, I slipped on ice (yeah, they just deiced the plane too and the fluid was already frozen). People inside the terminal heard me cussing up a storm. Even worse is the door seal was bad and that short hop to PIT all we heard was whistling and the cabin never got warm, and I had a hangover, and the flu. At least it was the last day of a four day and only five more legs to go, and luckily we were changing aircraft in PIT.

According to Aviation safety network (http://aviation-safety.net/database/record.php?id=20050921-0) the answer to the previous question is yes. BTW whatever happened was severe enough that the plane couldn't taxi to the terminal on it's own.

Hate to interupt the over-drama but the airplane did not leave the pavement. The ramp or taxiway was too icy to taxi so they asked for a tow-in to the gate. Nothing to see here.
