Viva Aerobus At AUS

Tue Dec 04, 2007 2:56 pm

Well I may just have to eat my hat. I didn't really think this ultra low cost idea was going to actually happen, however we had a visitor in AUS yesterday (12/3)

A Viva Aerobus 737 came in sometime between 1 and 3 (didn't check my watch) and parked on the maintenance ramp (I'm guessing where the "warehouse" terminal will be) and remained for about an hour. The ground handling company for them is our lav service and cleaners, and they are leasing the ground equipment from us...(not too happy about that). They took the air stairs over and all, but it was far enough away...and I was busy enough that I wasn't able to get any pictures or really tell what was going on. I am told it was a test flight.

They are starting flights from AUS to MTY.

AUS airport representatives are trying to get more international flights out of there. They approached a couple of airlines with no results, Continental Express dropped their service to Mexico, AM showed little interest. Viva-Aerobus is going to give AUS a shot. I'm sure they rather have Aeromexico, but they'll be happy to take Viva-Aerobus. I think they are still trying to lure Air Canada.

I don´t think that this route could result for Viva Aerobus, because is very close for MTY (Viva base) and a lot of people used to drive from MTY city to SAT and AUS because it takes about 4 1/2 hours driving (aprox.). Some other airlines like Continental express and Aeromexico flew it from Mexico city and the first one dropped and AM still flies it but not more with the 737-700 now it is fly by Aeromexico connect with the ERJ 145.

Air Canada would be awesome, I would love to see AUS-YVR because they really should be sister cities, however I just don't see that really happening. Austin's best opportunity for international expansion is south of the border. A daily CRJ to MEX via AM is all we have currently. I believe Viva-Aerobus is also wanting to add Guadalajara, Cancun, and at least one other destination. F9 has also tried AUS-CUn with little response.

I think this new terminal (if you can call it that) could open the door to Virgin America, however....

Air Canada flew to Austin for about a month. IIRC, it was in early 2000, daily from Toronto.

Unlikely. Virgin America is not an ultra-low cost carrier and would never, ever resort to using this kind of terminal.

It was closer to four and a half months. The service began June 5, 2000 and was discontinued October 28, 2000

Sorry about confusing the ERJ for AM...I thought it was a CRJ-700. They are with DL on the other end of the terminal...never see it very close.

canadian airlines used to fly to aus from yvr. When AC and Canadian merged AC kept aus for like a month then closed it. I have heard that the yields from yyz-aus and yvr-aus were good. But hopefully it will happen sooner or later. Maybe when we get more aircraft.  Smile

If they were good, it wouldn't have been discontinued. And I'm pretty sure nobody has ever flown YVR-AUS.

I stand corrected. I was confusing it with Ontario, which also launched at that time and actually did last a month.

I'd expect to see buses on the AUS end.

I'd say it's not even low cost

The problem AUS would have in expanding to the south is that SAT is only an hour away, and definitely has a closer relationship with Mexico. A quick drive down from AUS to SAT isn't much of a problem to catch a flight.. both markets are relatively small anyways. Good luck to Viva Aerobus with filling that 737!

Viva would not have problems filling the 737 from MTY to AUS, because they are an ultra low cost airlines offering very low fares. AM and MX have not been successful with flights to AUS and SAT because they want to sell their seats at very high prices (MEX-SAT used to be profitable for MX). It all comes to price elasticity and so far, Viva has been successful. I can even bet Viva will make AUS-CUN work offering low fares to UofT students that would go to Coco Bongo or DaddyO on a two day trip... In Cancun, you can find cheap but very classy accommodation year round (US$50 per night for two guests continental breakfast and taxes included in the City Express hotel - cheaper than a hostel in Europe).
