CO/TSA Launch Paperless Boarding Pass Program

CO, TSA launch Paperless Boarding Pass pilot program

CO and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) announced Tuesday the launch of a Paperless Boarding Pass pilot program. It will allow passengers to receive boarding passes electronically on their cell phones or PDAs, which will then be scanned by TSA security officers at the checkpoint and eliminate the need for a paper boarding pass.

Each paperless boarding pass will display a two-dimensional bar code along with passenger and flight information that will identify the traveler. TSA travel document checkers will use handheld scanners to validate the authenticity of the paperless boarding pass sent to CO passengers. The new technology heightens the ability to detect fraudulent boarding passes while improving customer service and reducing paper use.

Co-workers who have cell phones or PDAs are also encouraged to use the system whether pass traveling or using a revenue ticket. At this time, the pilot is only available for Houston departures on domestic trips. CO Security is working with TSA on expansion of the pilot program.

Sounds intersting...will it be available at the red-headed step child hub? I'd be half tempted to try it on my Christmas trip (CLE-IAH-SAN 21DEC/LAX-CLE 25DEC) or my next CLE-RIC the 2nd week of January.

Anywhere where I can find the technical requirments for the device to receive the 'paperless bp'?

WoW. We have had this for a year in Japan. Good to see the USA finally doing something.

NH and JL announced these programs a year ago. The big difference is that this is done in the US with the TSA...do they even understand technology?

The NH and JL systems can only be applied to domestic flights.

You buy your ticket online using their homepage. Pay using a credit card, take the train to the airport using your IC card phone (with built in train pass), check-in at a terminal by swiping your phone over a reader, your ticket data is put into your phone's IC, walk to security, pass over reader, Security says okay, walk to gate, swipe phone over reader, and board aircraft. There are small paper receipts so it is not 100% paperless boarding. These show things like flight and seat info.

The system in Japan also allows you to buy a ticket at a terminal with your IC as well.

JL Touch & Go (Japanese)
ANA Skip Service (Japanese)

NH system lets you skip Check-in completely and go straight to security and the gate.

If this system can work in the US, then it could speed up boarding and security even more. It can also save money for airlines and airports.
Yes...I am not a KIX fan. Let's Japanese Aviation!

If it's just the co-worker traveling why bother? All you need is your airline ID to get thru security. If the whole famn damily is traveling then it would be a neat trick.

Fraid not. Story from this mornings chronicle is linked.

I believe using your security badge for personal business is looked down upon.

I use it every time I travel non-rev, its a company issued ID and I am flying on my company aircraft and if not I am using a pass that is based on my employment with my airline. Its an ID recognised by TSA so why not?

The only problem I see with this is people in line that aren’t ready. Will we have to wait for them to fumble around with their phones and what not to bring the right screen up?

I think this works easier when you are leaving the airport where you are employed. TSA definitely seems to be cracking down on it at airports where you don't work. At LAX I used to have no problem with my airline ID from Texas, but the past two times I was told the badge did not have enough "required information" and that I needed a government issued ID.

As opposed to the people in line already who aren't ready to go through, fumbling through their things to get their boarding passes and the like. The real world functions different than we (a.netters) do.

So let me get this strait, they are going to try and scan a barcode off of a screen on your PDA or Cellphone... and then what are they going to do at the gate? Seems silly to me, and not to mention how many problems they are going to have. Computers can't do everything, especially with a nice reflective screen, i can see them having too many problems with this and dropping it.

Nope, as the story says, IAH only.

An employee badge is an employee badge. I jumpseated to BHM on WN a few months ago and stopped at the ticket counter to pick up a jumpseat form. Ticket counter agent said go to the gate, they have everything you need. I've never had a problem. Now if I tried to go down the jetway or onto the ramp without the right sida badge, that would be a different story.
