Getting A Message To Rampers?

For the third year in a row I'll be flying home on CO for the Christmas holiday -- CLE-IAH-SAN on 21DEC (With a 4 hour connection in IAH) and the LAX-CLE red eye on 25DEC.

In the past I've given Thank You/Holiday Greeting cards to the agents and crewmembers working my flights and it's been very well-received so I'm planning on continuing the tradition. One group I haven't been able to thank in the past are the rampers, and I'd like to include them since they're as critical as the agents and crew in pulling off a successful flight.

Ovbiously, I can't go down to the ramp and hand them cards myself (and even if I could, that's probably a really bad idea on a number of levels.

So, I ask the fourm: Is there a way to get cards to the rampers working a flight without causing a disruption/creating a hassle for anyone? General information is appreciated, as is information specific to CLE, IAH, SAN or LAX

Maybe hand them to one of the gate agents? I'm sure that they have to walk outside every now and then for some reason, and they'd probably be glad to pass them along.

Even better, give to one of the pilots IF you can PRIOR to their going to the plane. One will surely do a "walk-around" inspection and can forward it then.

You can always ask to speak with a supervisor or shift manager who I know will help you out.

Greeting cards? Really? As a ramper, I think that would be pretty cool! Your best bet is to give them to the Gate Agent...they have frequent contact with the ground operations person who can give them to the rampers...and would be glad to do so, unless you slip a $10 Starbucks card in there...in which case it's all the gate agent!!! LOL. Pilots can be tricky to catch, but they would be an option if the gate agent is busy.

Respectfully, supervisors are a little busy to be dealing with things that don't immediately pertain to operating an airline...however, if you have a few kudos to give for a specific flight/situation, they are EXACTLY the person to contact.

At O'Hare, if you are not a ramper, you are not allowed on the ramp. Period.

Anyone caught without the required visiblity vest is subject to a $10,000 fine. Only ramp employees and certain managers are issued the vests. You can pay the fine via payroll deduction if you like.

In Continental's world, look for one of the Supervisors of Airport Services (SAS for short). These are the folks that wear the red jackets. They are usually present during the boarding of an aircraft and they carry a radio for contacting ramp personnel. It is also not uncommon for them to leave the jetbridge to confer with the ramp supervisor. I'm sure they would be happy to comply with your request. As a Manager who spends lots of time on the ramp, I know your gesture will be greatly appreciated.

Here in YYZ us AC GROUND CREW are always required to take of the bridge/close the door I don;t know who does it down there if the ground crew does it you can do it that way or wait at the bridge head see if there are any strollers and wait for the ramp crew to come get it thats another way just trying to help the idea of the pilot is also great..

Thats pretty nice of you. In the past i have gotten a Starbucks card so that my whole crew could get something warm to drink during the nite. Well rampers usually deliver strollers and wheelchairs to the jetway. Maybe u can catch one when they are picking up or dropping off gate delivery items. VERY thoughful of you.

Seems odd in a way to me, as our F/As are on the ramp every day (the easiest way to get to the crew van to take them back to the hangar), a long with the pilots (pre-flights etc), ramp (obvious), check-in (mainly going to/from the bridge to drive it, and to guide pax to the aircraft with stairs), cabin services (to get to the aircraft, to unload our van, and to guide Condor pax), mechanics, security, and for some flights passengers (getting to the stairs).

Generally as long as you have a clearly-visible red pass on you and you have some form of high-visibility vest/coat, the apron is yours, at least at our airport.

Some airports down here are a bit more strict enforcing flight line rules than others. Flying regional jets, there's just no way to avoid not having to go on the flightline at one time or another. As an F/A if you do have to leave the aircraft it's best to either stay in the footprint of the aircraft or go straight to the gate. As a smoker though, I know where to go and where I'm allowed. A lot of airports are disallowing smoking altogether, (which I have to say is probably a good thing, at least on the ramp, not in the terminal though) even for the workers, ORD being the biggest one.

Anyway, Lincoln, that's a great gesture for the Holidays! The rampers do a lot of work that seems to not get noticed. Any recognition they get will be greatly appreciated! Thanks a lot, I wish more people had the holiday spirit when travelling. Merry Christmas!!!

Why not just adress ONE card to the ground crew? It can be posted in the operations or break room.

You can give it to the gate supervisor, requesting it be delivered to the ramp. It will probably be delivered after the push, unless you deliver it VERY early in the boarding process.

As for the thread, its very thoughtful of you to do that, Lincoln. I bet the gate agent would gladly pass along the cards to the rampers of your flight at the same time, the rampers would feel their work was worth it.  wave 

I gave some chocolates to a F9 flight crew on my first leg to DEN on Nov 19th and they were very appreciative of them. I didnt get free IFE out of the deal, but at least I brightened their spirits and was treated very, very well!  Smile

Thats funny because we are allowed to be on the ramp at any airport we serve as long as we have our company ID visible, And stay within 50 feet ( i believe ) of our aircraft. SOME airports do require you to have the green vests, which, they give us those if we need them.

ORD is one of the airports we serve, and this fine is news to me if thats the case.

And u all call youselves frequent flyers!  Smile

There is always a ramp guy at the bottom of the jetway when u board, is his job to hand carry down the strollers, hadicap items and any extra bags when cabin bins are full.

Xmas card! How 'bout a basket, a dozen donuts with red/green ribbons!

Not always. Sometimes we are all busy on the ground doing stuff. Once boarding is complete, then we double check the jetway for pink tags. Of course it's done a little different at every airport, airline, gate, day, flight.

I know I would love something like that after tirelessly stacking bags in the bin of a "bus".

A few years ago while I was still in the military I gave cards and a humongous box of Godiva chocolates to the crew of my AA153 flight from NRT to ORD. Throughout the whole flight every single crew member, including the pilots while on their rest breaks made it a point to say thank you and that they really appreciated the gesture......The FA's really loved the chocolate...lol.
Ok, wait for the RJ to pass, cleared to push tail south Mike, and you're cleared to spin #2 in the push.

Tempting, but in the past I've been advised against food 'for security reasons'  Sad ... I'm also trying to be relatively discreet about it -- having cards in a jacket pocket and handing one to the agent as you board is a lot easier to pull off unnoticed than carrying around 6 or more boxes of donuts (figure agents + rampers + crew at three airports and two segments)... TSA would have a cow!
