LH MUC - SZG / MUC - INN For EURO08

Fri Dec 07, 2007 10:34 am

LH is planning a direct link to all EURO 08 cities. That includes a 2 x daily connection MUC - SZG (150km) and obviously also INN.

Must be a crazy flighttime to both locations. 10 minutes on route, 30 minutes in the hold...

Why not 737s or 320s? If there are enough passengers booked or planned?

I flew on my 737 a lot of times: FRA-STR: 157km, FRA-CGN: 136km... Short flights indeed, but sometimes fully booked...
But my shortest flight ever from off block in NUE to on block in FRA was only 34 minutes total and thats 191km  Wink

My guess is that the flight is likely to attract very few customers. It will likely be primarily for people who are willing to pay the high price, such as UEFA officials and business associates. Even the regular year round FRA-SZG is a very expensive option on LH if you're connecting. For a regular Joe, you're much better off flying into MUC and then driving or taking the bus/train. In fact, used to be that if you booked a flight on BA into SZG, it was actually LHR-MUC-SZG where the MUC-SZG leg would be operated by bus  Smile I'm not sure if they still do that.

I checked now an Austrian Forum and it is written that they will use:

CRJ-900
CRJ-700
ATR-72
Avro RJ85

So no A330. Big grin

You may see some widebody charters as we saw in LIS for Euro2004 but then again, is there enough parking space at SZG for more than a couple of large planes? Also, the stadium at SZG is rather small and depending on who gets to play there, many fans may chose to just travel by road. Unlike Portugal, Austria is right in the middle of Europe and only a day's drive from just about anywhere.

There will be some but not a lot. VIE and ZRH will see more I guess. That is the big advantage that Austria is in the middle of Europe. Since England, Scotland and Ireland are not participating those are missing as well. Brits usually fly.  Smile

Looks like SZG may get lucky after all - Spotting wise. These are the games to be played in Salzburg:
June 10 Greece vs. Sweden
June 14 Greece vs. Russia
June 18 Greece vs. Spain

All of these countries are about as far as you can get from Salzburg and still be in Europe  Smile

This might be a little off topic, but I have to say something here:
Introducing a flight from MUC to INS and SZG is disgusting and very hypocrite of LH and Mayrhuber...
I appreciate LH very much for their work and their service but this is too much. In a recent interview Mayrhuber stated that "people that love the environment would rather fly than going by car" and that using and a/c is always less pollutive from 350km distance onwards. Introducing flights that only last 30 minutes on a distance less than 200km is ridiculos. Why not just arrange some codeshare with the Deutsche Bahn, linking MUC and INS and SZG with the ICE? LH already did the right step by dropping the CDG-FRA flight but apparently they only did it bc of too little demand rather than protecting the environment.
In times like these, where global warming has become such an important issue, carriers should rethink their services...in my humble opinion there should be laws that ban such short flights IF there is a decent connections via shuttle bus or train between the respective destinations (e.g. MUC and INS)
just my two cents

Can agree with you that this flights is a bit worthless, but I cant agree with you about a ban for short flights. Then we wouldn't see any domestic travel in many countries.

But LH is now a decent airline earning quite a lot of money... There is always 2 ways to look into a matter, yes, might be it is greener to go by ICE but then LH wont be able to take in the bit of profit. So how should they decide?

Because there's no railway station (except S-Bahn) at MUC so that's out of the question until the Transrapid is built. If no Transrapid, that's out of the question forever, as DB has stated that they have no interest in building a railway station at MUC for long-distance trains.

As been stated, there is no railway station at MUC only a "commuter" train stop, making any train travel between MUC and these cities a pain. The best alternative option is to drive, either by car or bus. That is what i do about twice a year. I believe there is a bus linking these airports but it's not very popular at all. For Europe, this is saying a lot.
The other factor is connecting traffic. I doubt many of the people travelling the short hop between MUC and SZG/INS will be O&D passengers. Most if not all of them will be connecting to somewhere else. For the busy business passenger, a convenient and quick 30 min connection at MUC for a short hop to SZG/INS is a lot more appealing than having to catch a train or a bus.

I'm sorry, I always mix CGN and CDG up. Of course I mean the CGN-FRA service that is now being served by a codeshare agreement between LH and Deutsche Bahn that links Cologne to FRA with the ICE within approx. one hour I think (and you can already check in in Cologne for your LH flight in FRA I think)
