Flashback: United 747-400 Touchdown At LAX

Fri Dec 07, 2007 11:17 pm

In going through some of my old airliner photos, I came across this one and thought I might share it with you: A United Airlines 747-400 in the 80's colors touches down in a huge puff of gray smoke at LAX. The details of this picture are a little nebulous in my tiny brain but I believe I took it in 1995 from Terminal 3.

Thanks for looking.

Not the best color scheme from United (the one previous to this was my favorite) but a 747-400 is always worth a look. Awesome plane. Thanks for the pic. Cheers.

I concur. Of all the United colors, I would have to say the 1993-2003 "stealth" colors (as it was known) sure beats the rather sterile, bland looking multi-hue blue and white seen today. And while I do concede that the color scheme shown above was definitly starting to look dated by the time it was replaced, it still had one thing going for it: bright colors. I happened to think it looked good on all planes. But I would've much preferred to see it updated as opposed to being replaced with dark blue and gray, with the red and orange being reduced to near invisible pencil thin lines.

You've reminded me of some trivia about the United Airlines in late 80s and early 90s when they wore this scheme.

1.In 1986, lots of PanAm 747SPs and L1011s were seceded to UA and flew to here in Japan. I used to enjoy spotting them at Narita.
2. Only a few of flights that should have been operated by L1011 were ship-changed to DC-10. At that chance I was surprised.
3. They flew very old 747-100s with 3 windows on upper deck, perhaps until late 90s.
One day an event happened with this old Jumbo; it made emergency landing to Narita with 3 of 4 engines
fail. On TV interview a girl passenger on board exclaimed that she was very scared to see the aircraft descend steeply.

By the way I remember UA had a minor modification on this scheme, getting the tier one step up or
down, how was that?

Also I think it nice that we have enjoyed 3 variation of UA scheme on their 747-400. I wish I could have seen
Japan Airlines' 747-400 in its 80s scheme. In the initial illustration to introduce their 747-400, it was in 80s scheme but in fact they have rolled out all in their newer scheme that today is almost gone either.

Do you mean the United "friend ship" scheme from the early 1970s? No please, you've got to be kidding!
Flights to the moon and all major space stations. At Pan Am, the sky is no longer the limit!

The pictured color scheme is by far the best UA has ever had, simple, bright and fresh. And the worst of all is the one that replaced it.

They had to lower the cheatlines to make room for bigger titles...

Yes sir! One of my favorite schemes of any plane ever. Clean and upbeat and unique. Classic.

I have to agree with OceansWorld's statement. (reply 5). The scheme on Matt D's photo is the best UA ever had. I'm particularly fond of the scheme on UA's 757s...making the 757 one handsome looking airplane, IMO. I have a model of a UA's 757 with that scheme in my office, simply I like the looks of it so much. Does this classic scheme have a name?
Makes me wonder now if I enjoyed admiring a well-painted aircraft more than a beautiful woman.  Wink
Regards.

I've always thought that this scheme was one of the best and definately one of the best liveries ever on the 747-400.

Oh yeah! The 757 IS a handsome looking airliner anyway.

I've always like the DC 8 in the 80s scheme. I remember seeing an image of it on A-net a while back... couldn't find it for the life of me, though.

IIRC, the red/orange/blue color scheme was introduced in 1974, and later modified during the '80s for the bigger titles. I believe that no DC-8 has ever worn the bigger titles, thus they remained in the '70s colors.
