FRA-CDG-SCL: +US$10,000 On AF In Y!

Sat Dec 08, 2007 11:20 am

One of my colleagues will be in Europe next week and he wanted to go to Chile to spend Xmas and New Year's. He was quoted by our travel desk at SGD15,500 per person in Economy on Air France.

Is the demand that high between Europe and Chile that merits those prices in Economy? I know he is booking only 2 weeks in advance, but still, that price is ridiculous!

Cheers

No way. The lowest possible price for FRA-SCL is now about 1800 USD on JJ, leave short before Christmas and return early January.
AF costs about 3000USD, that's a lot but not really out of the ordinary. Looks like a lousy travel agent to me.

Indeed. I'd imagine the travel agent simply took the full Y IATA fare CDG-SCL and the full Y IATA FRA-CDG and added them... even though there has probably been sold eight full Y IATA tickets worldwide total in the recent five years..  Wink

Remember too that tickets prices are also set by value. That is why if you book 2 weeks in advanced it must be more important than say if you booked 2 months ago. That is what I was always told by NW and AA.

SGD15,500

What currency is SGD? What is the exchange rate to the USD?

Second point: in which country did your colleague try to buy the ticket? Was it in Europe?
In the 90s, when I worked for a passenger airline, I remember there was an IATA rule on fares , called SITI,SITO,SOTI,SOTO.
Your example looks like a SOTO (sale and ticketting Out of departure country). If this rule still applies, you are in the worst scenario. (and you will have crazy prices with other IATA airlines as well)

SCL is doing great in all airlines. During the high season prices are indeed high, and it is difficult to find a seat. The best alternative is JJ via GRU, although you have to book in advance.

This has no sense and is obviously a mistake. I just made a fare search on the German AF website for FRA-SCL via CDG with travel dates on dec 20 and return on jan 1st and the fare (return trip) was 2,631 Euros in Y. This is expensive (but it's Christmas time and almost a last-minute reservation) but its not US$10,000
