Anyone know the aircraft's age? It is always sad to see a big, beautiful 747 sent to the great junkyard in the sky. But I can't help looking at the plane and wondering where it has been, what it has seen and the people it carried along. Sad. Not tearful sad, but sad just the same.
I love dem planes....

The aircraft was delivered to CX as VR-HIK on October 10th, 1986. April 27th, 1999 is the date when it joined PK fleet.

I can't understand why they'd scrap the younger 743 before those old 742s which are probably 10 odd years older, maybe more! I think it may be to do with the 742s being combi versions though.

Well, the two B747-240B(M) are not even ten years older than the six former CX aircraft. One was delivered in 1979, and the other in 1980. The older one is stored at KHI. All the other B742s, that were even older (former CP AIr and TP aircraft) were retired sometime ago already.

Thanks from across the pond. 20 + years a decent life span, I just wonder if the economics of the plane don't work anymore or if there are simple fatigue issues involved. I understand it is all about the maintenance. Or fuel.

Are you sure they´re scrapping it? I think I read somewhere just recently that it will be back in service soon. PIA seems to have some shortage with the RR engines. And the EU ban meant that they were in no haste to refurbish the plane.

Considering the state PIA is in I doubt that will be happening.
