EK And A330-300?

Sun Dec 09, 2007 5:09 pm

You may recall reports, a while back - before EK ordered the A350s - that it was also going to order a good number of A330-300s, as an interim measure (much like SQ did); however, as far as I can see, this came to nothing. Is it still being considered?

I imagine it is still being considered, but a ~250t 787-10 would make a fantastic A330-300 replacement so EK might very well be waiting for Boeing to offer it and then will order it along with the 787-8 or 787-9, which would be the A330-200 replacement.

As long as EK seats 10 abreast in the T7s but not 9 abreast in the busses, it might after all be more economic to refurbish the oldest 777s and keep them in service longer than planned than purchasing A333s.

They've already started selling some 777s:

That aside, I wonder why EK and EY haven't chosen the A333. On most of their flights, the A332's range isn't needed, and if filled, the A333 has a lower CASM. Trips cost should be about the same as A332.
Exceptions confirm the rule.

I wonder that too... I think the A330-300X would perfectly fit their actual fleet, just as QR did, thus making an interesting interim solution before the EIS of the A350XWB. It could be an ideal replacement of the older non-ER 777s too.

Im not sure they need more planes. They have tonnes of 777s on order.

If lots of airlines take A330s as interim planes until their A350s arrive, there will be a lot of A330s being returned in 7 years time.

I totally agree with you, but you know M.Clark galactic ambitions. Nothing is too much for EK! New Dubai airport, traffic expansion (explosion?) and lot of money... They want to be THE biggest. weightlifter

They will likely find new homes as it is still a desirable family of aircraft.
