Smoking In The Cockpit (Video)

Sun Dec 09, 2007 8:54 pm

Apologies if it's a repost.

The F/A and F/O are both smoking cigarettes, no sign of the captain. Not sure what Airline it is. I'm slightly alarmed, but if the crew can light up in flight, why can't I ? So much for "All XYZ operated flights are non-smoking".

I've just been on a cockpit visit a few weeks ago in Europe on a EU airline, and the captain was smoking, he offered me one, and one of the cabincrew came there later to smoke as well. He said it's up to the captains if they smoke or not.

Why be alarmed? It's not a safety thing, but a health thing. I loved it! ( 4.5 hours flight...  Smile )

Smoking is banned on flights only in the US (and maybe some other countries). Most European countries allow it. Why do you think airplanes are still made with no-smoking signs that can be turned off?

In theory they can't in the UK anymore.. this is because we have the smoking ban which bans smoking in the workplace - and Pilots and F/A's work on planes meaning they can't smoke on them.

Thats if they even allowed it in the first place.

That's an airline choice. Mostly it is out of tradition. Some have swithed over to have blanks or signs indicating restrictions on operating electronics on board.

Quoting BlueShamu330s (Reply 4):

It wasn't that long ago that there were a few carriers that still allowed smoking. Air Berlin comes to mind. There are a few charter carriers that have recently allowed smoking. So while almost all airlines have banned smoking, I don't believe it is banned in all EU countries. The United States has banned smoking on all domestic flights and finally banned it on international flights a few years ago.

They say it's a 777-300/ER (77W). Now not to stereotype, but the pilots look to be of middle eastern origin.

EK or EY, perhaps?

The cockpit is exempt from smoking bans. Would you want your pilots stressed because they cannot smoke? As the last link between making your destination safely and being permanently remanded to the earth....the pilots are allowed this privilege.

I'd rather have a pilot that wasn't addicted to any drugs.

Before anyone brings it up, caffeine isn't so bad, as most aircraft have a ready supply of the stuff.

There is supposed to be an airline formed in Germany called "Smintair" or Smokers International Air. They have only one route which is DUS to NRT. I smoke and find flying less pleasurable that I cannot smoke but people can drink. I do not drink but I certainly would not impose no drinking on those who wish to drink. So why am I prohibited from smoking on a flight?

Although I'm a smoker, I'm actually glad there's no smoking on flights. It's just cleaner, and that first cig out of the airplane is so much more pleasurable.

I remember the 777 bunk area and always wondered whether flight attendants would smoke down there.

I wish more airports had smoking areas beyond security. We have one at MIA in concourse D and I remember IAD had one each in C and D (don't know if they're still there). I was really upset LHR had removed theirs. What other airports have them?

The video is somewhat unprofessional. Although it may not be against the law in the respective country, it may be against the airline's policy?

I've seen a pilot of a 738 smoking inside a cockpit whilst the aircraft was on the apron, I was rather surprised to see him flick his cigarette ash out of the window and onto the apron. - That's what I call irresponsible!

You seriously can't last without a light for a few hours? You rather have a stop than a non-stop so that you can light up? I'm not a smoker so I guess I can't relate.

Atlanta still has smoke rooms on just about every councourse. I think it's pretty convenient for those that want to take a drag between flights

Last time I checked, a person drinking next to me isn't getting their dirty, deadly habit all over me, my clothes, and my personal belongings. Not to mention many people are allergic to cigarette smoke. The person next to you deserves to have an allergic reaction or die because you have a filthy habit? What an ignorant remark!

Many airlines' policy is to have a FA go into the flightdeck while the Cpt. or FO uses the lav. I wouldn't stress to hard on the capt. not being there when a FA is. Its not uncommon.

Cigarrette smoke, in addition to being quite harmful to one's lungs, also does a number on avionics and flight instruments...

One of the grossest jobs I ever had was when I was in college and worked as a PC support tech. We got an IBM PC (the original) in that went nutzo when it was powered on (garbage on the screen, beeping, etc.). Turns out it belonged to a chain smoker. You should have seen the smoky, tarry film that coated everything mechanical and electronic inside this poor system's innards. We had to junk the disk drives (no hard disk, it was the original PC  Wink ), take the power supply apart and thoroughly clean it, and thoroughly clean the motherboard and all the slots and peripheral card connections (and the cards themselves) within  yuck  . Oh, and it smelled horrible, too...

I wouldn't mind if the crew was smoking in the enroute cruising phase. Yea they ruin their health but that's their right.

The reason why crew is allowed to smoke, and passengers aren't, I think, is that it's a lot easier to keep an eye on two cigarettes than on two hundred of them. The crew knows what they're doing and they don't fall asleep with a cig on their lips or anything.
