How Many Chances Do We Have To Fly An MD11!

Mon Dec 10, 2007 2:46 pm

Hi!

Well, we have less and less airlines flying people like you and me in the good old MD11. I'm glad that we still have good chances to see that plane around, mostly in cargo flights with cargo airlines, but has a passenger I think the oportunities are getting narrower more and more. So I'm here requesting to some of the enthusiasts in the countries were you still can find MD11 in passenger service to give us the airlines that still fly this great airplane and what routes we can find them...juts checking out that I found 3 airlines that you might have a good chance to fly the plane, but I don't have a clue regarding their routes:

- KLM
- Finnair
- TAM

I wait your awesome feedback like always!!!
regards

I was under the impression that these were the only 3 scheduled carriers operating this type and in fact that seems to be the case. This list - http://www.airfleets.net/listing/md11-1.htm - shows the current operator of all MD11s built and your will see the bulk are operating as freight haulers the exceptions being the ones you already pointed out, AY, KL and TAM.

KLM flies from AMS to NYC with MD-11 in January. It's not too expensive and as I love tri-jets which are becoming rare, I booked a return flight. I'll stay only two nights.
Maybe your best and cheapest chance to fly a MD-11......

Hmmmm - well worth a go I think. The girlfriend will hate it no doubt as they dont have PTVs and are cramped but I HAVE to fly an MD11 before they are gone and I do have a NYC trip planned for the new year.
What do you mean you dont have any bourbon? Do you know how far it is to Houston? What kind of airline is this???

TAM is currently flying them on JJ 8096/8097 GRU-CDG-GRU and JJ8060/8061 GRU-MXP-GRU. Mid 2008 all three MD11 will be replaced by 773ER. So, hurry before it is too late...  Wink

It's not C C/F, but CF and F. MP has always had such a fleet. CF stands for Convertible Freighter, which means that the aircraft can be used for passengers or cargo. Since about two years, their four MD-11CFs are only used for cargo, but as far as I know, they haven't been completely converted to cargo only, unlike the two former MD-11CFs of WO.

correct, AZ was the only one that ordered the MD-11C (Combi). That is also the only MD-11 which has the cargo-door in the back, the CF and F have it in front of the wing.

Isn't there also a weekly scheduled flight with an airline (the name of which escapes me) from the US to Africa, possibly Luanda, on MD11 metal? I believe it's leased from World Airways, but operates as a scheduled flight, not a charter.

You're making me think about taking a trip on KLM to Amsterdam from JFK . I just checked and they have an great promo fare for $324 USD. The leg to AMS is on MD-11. But I dont know. Any money I save will be given back quickly with the current exchange rates. USD is not my friend overseas. Amsterdam is an expensive town isnt it?
I should fly an MD-11 to somewhere else. Finland is an expensive place too, for an American. Maybe I'll just go for a few days. Soon those planes will be gone.

Amsterdam will be cheaper than any Scandinavian city. Do it! If you're used to the prices in NY or Chicago, you'll find AMS to be very cheap!

You're joking right? How can Amsterdam be inexpensive? Anyway, Im sure its fun and filled with really cool people. If I dont make it on an MD-11, I can maybe try NW out of BDL to AMS, because its close to where I live in Connecticut.

It's not a charter but more a VIP aircraft with just 113 seats. Quite different from our usual Y-class configuration...

It's a charter. You have to be a member of a particular private group (the US-Africa Energy Association) in order to be able to book a seat on it. That makes it a private charter rather than a public charter, but it's a charter nonetheless. It runs multiple times per week in each direction in accordance with a schedule, so it's a "track" charter. But it's a charter.

None! Unless your a pilot trained to fly this type of equipment.

Sorry I could not help it... Silly

It is a shame that not too many are in service in the USA for passenger service, except an occasional charter.
This is one plane I have not flown on and doesn't look like I ever will.

I was looking at different options for DFW-DEL next year. KLM is soon to start DFW service, and I can go DFW-AMS-DEL. The AMS-DEL is listed as MD11. I'm seriously thinking of booking this flight just so I can fly KLM and a MD11. I have never flown KLM, visited AMS, or flown on a MD11.

They don't need to plug their windows now, just strip the aircraft and deactivate the doors they don't need. There are a few freight operators (e.g. 5Y, LH) that have, or used to have, converted freighters that kept most if not all of the windows.

It is amazing the things we do to fly on a particular aircraft type!!!

I flew on the MD-11 N272WA when Aer Lingus leased it a few years ago - just on a return internal flight between Belfast and Shannon for only £75 return, thats about US$140 at current rates. I am very glad now that I did it.

Anyway, to get to my point, I just recently completed a trip to the far east where I planned my itinerary just to get on the Airbus A310, the only western built wide body airliner model on which I hadn't flown. My efforts paid off by flying with Air India from Hong Kong to Bangkok return in October, albeit I got OK-YAD both directions which is wet leased from CSA. Price was £140 return, about US$270. I did hope however for a VT registered aircraft but it wasn't to be - can't have everything! The flights were very enjoyable with full Air India cabin service, flight deck crew however were CSA. It was interesting to be sitting near to the front and still be beside the engine intake, just like the much smaller Airbus A319!

I might post some photos on this site soon if I get the time.

Somone will correct me if I'm wrong, I'm sure, but I believe the RAF pretty much now uses chartered civil aircraft 330s, 747s, to the Falklands. The Tristars are all needed in Iraq/Afghanistan etc.

Flew the MD-11 several times on Swiss Air to GVA back in the 90's before the all Airbus thing.
Fabulous take off...and that great, at the time anyhow, in flight Swiss service.

Fly CO now to GVA and Zurich to accrue those miles!

Though can't decide if the MD-11 take off is better than the 757...

Great idea for a thread CV990. If all goes well, I will make two MD-11 trips in the next four years. One with AY JFK-HEL before retirement and later on to AMS on KL, although I'm not sure what routing I will take. There is unfortunately no pax MD-11 service here at ORD anymore.

Drinking & eating is a bit more expensive in Helsinki, but the difference isn't that great anymore. The biggest difference seems to be that inexpensive hotel rooms are easier to find in A'dam. Talking about prices in Europe generally the both cities are above avarage, but they are less expensive than Oslo, London, Copenhagen....

About AY and MD11, this winter season the destinations from HEL are:

BKK
PEK
CAN
KIX
HKG
DEL
JFK

AY's busiest MD11 route is HEL-BKK, with two daily departures in winter. The other long haul destinations NRT, NGO, PVG and BOM are operated by A343's.
I will fly BKK-HEL on AY MD11 one way in January - spent all my OW air miles to get a biz seat

All seven MD11's will leave AY's fleet by spring 2010, next year the first two will go to SU Cargo.

Quoting Alessandro (Reply 41):

Yes, I have been both to Helsinki and A´dam during the last 5 years.

A bit off the topic but...
The Mercer Human Resource Consulting surveys list the most expensive cities for expat employees and 2007 they put Helsinki to the 13th and Amsterdam the 15th place in Europe (globally 22th and 25th).

I can agree: Helsinki is a bit more expensive than Amsterdam, but the difference is small. And both cities are less expensive than feared by many tourists.

Why all the fuzz  Smile MD-11 Pax service will be here for a while. KLM will keep them flying untill atleast 2014....... All 10 of them.

Martinair stopped with PAX MD-11 service since end summer 2006, The only plane that fly's pax now are the 767's

For my self, i fly the MD-11 like 4 times a year, and its a great plane, which is unfortunatly getting a bit to old....

What do you have to do in order to book a flight with RAF?I have never heard of civilians being able to book travel on military aircraft?
Support the beer and soda can industry, your recycle old airplanes!
